US Open Golf 2012: Disappointing Players Who Will Bounce Back in Round 2
The Olympic Club wasted no time beating up on some of the world's best golfers. Only Tiger Woods found success in the superstar trio of Woods, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson while the other trio of defending champion Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood fell apart as well.
It's unlikely that the leaders will blow the lead wide open (although Tiger is hitting the ball dangerously well), so there is chance to a return.
That said, the course at the Olympic Club isn't getting any easier.
Here's a look at the players who struggled in Round 1 but should find their way back in Day 2—maybe not into contention, but at least above the cut.
Phil Mickelson
It was a terribly ugly day for Phil, and he's actually lucky Bubba was there to stink even worse.
One thing we did see from Lefty was that he was so off that he almost couldn't be any worse. He made a few good shots that could've turned this around, but he also wasn't catching any breaks.
We can expect him to tighten things up today since the leaders aren't going anywhere fast, and he could fight his way back to at least a respectable score ahead of the cut.
Luke Donald
Luke simply isn't this bad. He's already back on the course this morning with Rory and Lee, and he simply isn't as bad as his nine-over from yesterday.
He's basically eliminated from contention, but he'll be damned if he posts another number that atrocious today.
Look for the world's No. 1 ranked player to shore things up a bit here on Day 2.
Zach Johnson
Zach only had one bird and struggled to consistently hit fairways, but the 36-year-old will find his way.
He's always struggled at the US Open but won a the Crown Plaza in late May and then failed to make the cut at the FedEx St. Jude last week.
This roller coaster, up-and-down thing has been his M.O. this season, so technically this should be an up week.
Look for him to balance out today.
