Who to Watch

Tiger Woods

Tiger is the golfer to watch in the second round of this tournament.

He was on top of his game, which is huge for Tiger. He needed to get off to a good start at the Olympic Club after finishing strong at the Memorial.

We've seen Woods get into these grooves before. The ones where he has tunnel vision for the entire tournament and just keeps getting better and better over the course of 72 holes.

We don't usually see him start as good as he did in the opening round, which is something that the rest of the field should be seriously worried about.

It seems like every tournament Tiger performs well in, he hits that one signature shot that gives him what he needs to pull through. Such shots usually don't come around until the later rounds, but Woods got his in the opening round on a fifth-hole birdie putt on an extremely difficult shot.

If there's one guy you should watch in the second round, it's Tiger Woods.

Michael Thompson

Who is Michael Thompson?

That's the question most people are asking following the 27-year-old's improbable climb to the top of the leader board on Thursday. He finished the day at 4-under, and rightfully so, seeing as he played well at this course in 2007 when he was the U.S. Amateur runner-up.

He got off to a bad start, bogeying three of his first half-dozen holes, but bounced back and birdied half of his final eight.

A bad start and a good finish is much better than a good start and a bad finish. Thompson should have no problem building off his momentum after a spot-on first round.

It's going to be interesting to see how Mickelson bounces back after his play of late.

Lefty withdrew from his opening round at the Memorial Tournament after shooting a 79, the worst score of his career at Muirfield Village.

He followed that up with a round that was almost as bad. Mickelson finished day one at 6-over par, tied for 124th in the field. He's going to miss the cut if he keeps performing at this rate, and nobody likes when Phil misses a cut.

Whether you're routing him on or routing for him to get cut, he's a must-see in the second round.
