NBA Rumors: Heat, Knicks and Clippers Reportedly Top Ray Allen's Wish List
Ray Allen and the Boston Celtics were on the cusp of another NBA Finals appearance before the Miami Heat defeated them in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals. Now, the unrestricted free agent will likely have a number of options regarding his future.
It’s likely that Jesus Shuttlesworth’s first choice is returning to the C’s, if they will have him and Kevin Garnett back for one more shot at a title run. However, there is a strong chance that Boston looks to rebuild this summer and moves on without the two future Hall of Famers.
Should GM Danny Ainge opt not to re-sign Allen, Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated and ESPN’s Jared Zwerling have found that the all-time leading three-point shooter is interested in playing for the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers or Miami Heat.
All three of these franchises would gladly welcome the 16-year veteran with open arms.
The Knicks need a veteran presence that can hit the big shot and space the floor. However, Ray has a limited amount of time left in the NBA and may not want to play with a developing PG like Jeremy Lin.
Los Angeles is an intriguing choice, as the Clippers seriously need a solid 2 that can play off the ball and be a target for Chris Paul to kick out to. The Clippers made it to the final four in the West this year and have a chance to compete with the Thunder next year for the conference.
Miami is another squad that gives Allen an excellent chance at winning a second championship before he retires. The Heat are currently in their second consecutive NBA Finals and aren't looking like they are going to go away anytime soon as long as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are on the roster.
Considering the team has been starting Shane Battier at PF, it would have no problem putting LBJ, D-Wade and Ray out on the floor for stretches of small ball. Allen gives the Heat an extremely reliable deep threat that is a much better option than Mike Miller.
The Clips and Heat can also offer the SG more than a $1.4 million veteran’s minimum contract, which is the best the Knicks can do. Money and guaranteed years will certainly play a role in where the marksman decides to sign.
It’ll be interesting to see where Allen decides to play in 2012-13, and he certainly will not be hurting for suitors.
