Holland vs. Germany: Why Struggling Dutch Squad Stands No Chance

Mike MoraitisJun 7, 2018

After a disappointing opening match loss to Denmark, Holland finds itself in trouble early in group play with a very formidable opponent, Germany, next up on the docket.

Hopes were high for the 2010 World Cup runner-up as the Dutch were a favorite to take Euro 2012 by storm and walk out champions.

However, it appears their fortunes have changed rather quickly and now they are just scrapping to stay alive.

But their match with Germany won't be easy, and Holland won't be able to overcome the better squad. Here's why the Dutch are in major trouble against the Germans.

Trouble Finishing Scoring Chances

The Dutch might have been shut out against Denmark, but they certainly had their opportunities to capitalize on several chances.

It was clear who the better squad was, however, as Holland dominated the Danes from start to finish. A lot of good that did them.

What's more troubling is that the Dutch gave Denmark their best and still weren't able to pull out at least a tie. If their best wasn't good enough for Denmark, how on earth will it be enough to top Germany?

One thing's for certain: If the Dutch have chances to score on Germany, they can ill afford to squander them.

Germany's Defense

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the premier goal scorers on the planet, but Portugal's star player couldn't even muster up a single goal against Germany.

That's because the Germans play superb defense that can smother an offense's best player and take him out of a match. Even if their defense breaks down, Germany is the best at protecting their goaltender and keeping the ball away from the front of the net.

Holland's chances will be few and far between against the better defense, and even if they do get their chances, most likely Germany will turn them away.

A special effort will be needed on offense if the Dutch want to sneak one by their opponent on Wednesday.

Extra Pressure

The pressure is surely mounting as the promising Dutch squad faces the brink of elimination and a disappointing ending to Euro 2012.

Most of Holland's best players are in the prime of their careers and for many, it could be their last chance to win this tourney at the top of their respective games. So before having to potentially rebuild the roster, Holland must win it all now.

Not doing so could spoil a great opportunity to win with such a talented team. But as the Dutch discovered in their opening match, talent isn't everything, and in the end you still must execute.

There's no telling if this club will fold under the pressure or not, but that pressure will be at an incredibly high level.

A nearly identical roster from two years ago wasn't able to get it done when it mattered most in the World Cup final, and with their back against the wall, it wouldn't be much of surprise if Holland folded again.
