Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Why Superfight Has Lost All Its Luster

Chris TrapassoJun 2, 2018

No longer do Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather represent boxing's superfight.

After Tim Bradley's highly controversial victory over Pacman, that's been made quite obvious.

Pacquiao's record and reputation are now damaged as the premier challenger for the undefeated Mayweather. Gone is Pacquiao's allure after he lost to the 28-year-old Bradley. While he was riding an impressive winning streak during the 2000s, the potential fight between the two lightweights was being hyped as boxing's biggest showdown.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao has hit so many snags over the last three years, it's plausible to think it'll never happen.

The overwhelming majority of boxing fans have grown tired of being sold on the "possibility" of the fight happening.

Now, could the powers that be in boxing be fed up with the waiting game? Are they ready to move on and bill a bout between two different fighters as the sport's superfight?

The Bradley vs. Pacquiao decision seems like those are distinct possibilities.

The thought now could be that a rematch between those two may carry more appeal than simply continue to sell everyone on a Mayweather vs. Paquiao fight that's gets increasingly more unlikely as every week passes by.

What better way to create buzz for a rematch fight than initially give the underdog a win in a supremely controversial and stunning way?

For those still dreaming of a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight, dream on.

Boxing is attempting to create its new "superfight"—one that's guaranteed to happen.
