Euro 2012 Results: Teams Whose Hopes Are Already Hanging by a Thread

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

The 2012 UEFA European Championship is less than a week old, yet there are already a few squads who have a lot of work to do if they want to keep their title dreams alive.

Considering that there is just one week left before we get into the knockout phase, there is no time to waste. You have to start out hot and fast, and a loss or draw out of the gate does not do you any favors.

Here is a look at the squads who are in desperate need of some good luck as we enter the second games of the group stage.

Czech Republic (0-1-0, Minus-3 Goal Differential in Group A)

There were virtually no expectations for the Czech Republic coming into the tournament, and they lived up to that billing with a lifeless performance against a Russian squad that are feeling really good right now.

I am not expecting some miraculous turnaround for the Czech Republic against Greece and Poland before bowing out of the tournament after Saturday. They can take comfort in knowing they got to play on the stage, but that will be as far as they go.

Netherlands (0-1-0, Minus-1 Goal Differential in Group B)

The Euro Championship did not get off to a banner start for the powerhouse Netherlands, with a 1-0 loss against Denmark. That was one of the biggest shockers of the first weekend of action.

Now, heading into a match against the powerful German squad, the Netherlands have their backs up against the wall. They are going to need a lot of help over the next two Group B matches to make it to the knockout phase.

We all knew the "Group of Death" was going to be brutal, but the Netherlands were supposed to be one of the two squads coming out of it. They have a lot of work ahead of them to make that happen.

England (0-0-1, Draw vs. France in Group D)

England have been making a strong comeback after a few down years. They are currently ranked No. 5 in the FIFA World Rankings and were thought to be the dominant team in Group D.

A draw in their first match against France does not scream, "Look at us!" No one else took control of the Group, with Ukraine being in first place after one round of matches. I'm not expecting England to fail, though they do have to come out strong against Sweden.

Of course, having Wayne Rooney on the bench for a suspension is not going to help matters against them.
