El Salvador vs Mexico: Stars That Will Dominate in El Tri Qualifying Victory

Mike ChiariJun 12, 2012

After a somewhat sloppy performance in their opening CONCACAF World Cup qualifier against Guyana, Mexico will look to put forth a more consistent effort against El Salvador. The match won't be an easy one as it will be played in hostile territory from El Tri's perspective, but Mexico has the talent to overcome El Salvador.

If Mexico is going to score another win in group play, though, it will need great efforts from its top players. Provided Mexico's stars show up, Mexico should have little issue coming out on top. If El Salvador finds a way to slow down the Mexican attack, however, you never know what might happen.

Mexico was extremely impressive in a recent friendly against Brazil, however, so I can't see La Verde faltering. Here are three stars that will shine for Mexico in what figures to be yet another qualifying win on Tuesday.

Chicharito

As one of the most explosive strikers in the world, it should come as no surprise that Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez heads this list. Chicharito didn't score in Mexico's 3-1 win over Guyana, but he is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Chicharito netted 21 goals for Manchester United this past season at the highest level of club soccer, so there is no doubt that he will be a dangerous player against El Salvador.

Defending Chicharito will be a double-edged sword for the underdogs because if El Salvador decides to focus all of its defensive attention on the Mexican star, there are other players who can hurt them. Also, Chicharito is no stranger to being bracketed on the pitch, so he has methods to counteract stingy defenses. One way or another, Chicharito will have a big impact on this match.

Andres Guardado

For as much as Chicharito makes the Mexican attack dangerous, midfielder Andres Guardado is one of the players who truly makes it go. He is very offensively gifted in the middle and has the ability to score on his own or to set up his teammates. If El Salvador decides to do everything it can to take Chicharito out of the game, then Guardado figures to be one of the main beneficiaries.

Guardado scored six goals in 13 contests in the Spanish Segunda this past season so there is no question that he is a dangerous offensive threat in his own right. The Mexican squad has an embarrassment of riches offensively and Guardado is unquestionably one of the main players that El Salvador will have to gameplan against.

Giovani Dos Santos

He may not have quite as much star power as Chicharito, but Giovani Dos Santos is nearly as integral to Mexico's success. The skilled midfielder hasn't been able to nail down a full-time job at Tottenham as of yet, but his international play has been marvelous. Dos Santos has three goals in five contests this year for Mexico including what was ultimately the deciding tally against Guyana.

Dos Santos may not finish with as much regularity as Chicharito, but he may be the player who is most responsible for pressing the issue against El Salvador. If he is given too much room to operate thanks to Chicharito's presence, then Dos Santos figures to have a field day. All he needs is a bit of an opening and he can make even the most talented teams pay.
