Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley Results: Desert Storm's Luck Will Run out

Ian HanfordJun 10, 2012

Timothy Bradley stole victory from the jaws of defeat in last night's WBO welterweight contest. The MGM Grand crowd witnessed one of the worst decisions in boxing history.

For technical purposes, Bradley is the new world champion. But for anyone who watched Saturday night's contest, Pac-Man is still the "real" champ.

Chances are, when a rematch is penciled in by the fight's promoter the next day, things did not end how they should have. Bob Arum was outspoken about the judge's outrageous decision, and he did not hesitate to make things right.

Bradley got lucky. He indirectly admitted fighting an inferior fight. He was as shocked as anyone when Michael Buffer bellowed "new welterweight champion."

Expect that luck to run out. Assuming the November rematch comes to fruition, Bradley will be dismantled in his second tussle with Pacquiao.

Let's take a look at why a rematch is the right choice and why Pacquiao's talent advantage will shine through next fall.

Personal Integrity

Like I said before, Bradley wasn't exactly expecting a new belt to be strapped around his waist. He knew Pac-Man bested him, and the first blemish on his record seemed inevitable.

Winning a world championship while surrounded by biter resentment of the decision is not a good idea. Without a rematch, Bradley would forever have to deal with a Pacquiao-sized shadow lingering over his head.

Arum's snap decision to pit these two against each other again was spot on. He has a contract with each fighter, and he knows what is necessary in this situation.

Desert Storm doesn't want to carry that belt around with controversy attached to the strap. He wants to hold that belt, and people need to know he earned it. Right now, boxing fans see Bradley's victory as a sham. A rematch gives him a chance to alter those assumptions.

What to Expect in the Rematch

Pacquiao remembers, better than anyone, Saturday night's unthinkable decision. He already feels the empty void left by the surrendered WBO belt. He will take all of that emotion, combine it with his talent and pick Bradley apart in their second go-around.

Giving a gifted fighter extra motivation is rarely a good idea. Bradley didn't ask for it, but the chip on Pac-Man's shoulder will result in his punishment.

Pacquiao's nonstop work ethic and his extreme power advantage will overrun Desert Storm in November. He is a technically sound fighter, but he cannot stick with a frenzied Pac-Man.

Bradley should enjoy the belt while it lasts. He has a bright career ahead of him, but he will have to take his lumps against Pacquiao first.

But this time, the judges won't be there to save him.
