Brave Arsenal Hold On but There's Still That Taste in the Arsenal Fan's Mouth

Callum D'SouzaFeb 8, 2009

Arsenal 0 Tottenham 0. Considering the circumstances Arsenal were faced with, I suppose a draw was a relatively good result. Unfortunately there is a sour taste left in the Arsenal fans' mouths as it was another disappointing performance.

Even when Arsenal had their precious 11 on the pitch they still looked little better than a Championship side. There were too many inconsistent performers and Arsenal never really looked set from the word go.

The disaster period for Arsenal came half way through the first half when a series of nightmarish events happened for the Gunners.

Emmanuel Eboue, what would be the right word to explain his actions? Idiotic, a cretin, a moron, a Tottenham player? After the Ivorian's goal was disallowed he decided he would spend the rest of his time on the field sulking and it cost him and his team two points.

A good passage of play led to Eboue on the edge of the 12-yard box with Emmanuel Adebayor on the penalty spot charging in like a raging bull and Robin van Persie wide of the goal. Eboue played the short ball to Adebayor which was undoubtedly the wrong one as two Tottenham immediately swooped him up.

Whilst Adebayor was charging in, the Togolese forward gave Micheal Dawson a rather hard push. Mike Dean immediately noticed the infringement and called play to a halt. Eboue failed to hear the elegant whistle of Mr Dean and with the ball at the edge of the goal he quickly pounced and hammered it home.

It took a few seconds for the moron to realise his second Premier League goal would be robbed of him. Eboue was obviously frustrated with the call and it showed as minutes later Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna was pinged for a debatable foul on Luka Modric. Eboue, who was obviously still frustrated with his disallowed goal, immediately confronted Dean and began a tedious rant.

The Ivorian kept going and finally Dean struck out with a fluorescent yellow wad of paper. Eboue's first yellow card.

Eight minutes before the interval Luka Modric crashed into Eboue. To the eye it seemed nothing more than an accident, but Eboue was not impressed and immediately lashed out at Modric's ankles causing the Croatian to launch into a mid-air somersault. After much confusing and talking Eboue was told to take an early shower and if his team was lucky never return to the field for them again.

Barely minutes before Eboue's stupidity Emmanuel Adebayor was stretched off with a hamstring tear. It seems the injury gods love tormenting Arsene Wenger. So in the space of five minutes Arsenal lost a striker to injury and a moron to infringements. Fans just couldn't wait till half-time.

The second half was a different story. Arsenal were close to phenomenal in defence, thanks to William Gallas and Manuel Almunia who stepped up and showed their leadership and experience. Robin van Persie again showed touches of brilliance and almost scored a thriller by making something out of nothing.

But the Dutchmen failed to see sufficient ball and was left with some horror passes from Denilson and Alexandre Song—who you feel couldn't even make Reading's starting XI.

Both central midfielders failed to step up in the absence of Eboue and both seemed lost and confused.

Samir Nasri was occasionally brilliant but went missing far to often. Gael Clichy showed horror defending and was lucky Lennon is an all-round poor finisher as Clichy would have been left very red-faced. Clichy failed to deal with Lennon's blistering pace and was left on many occasions out of position and chasing dust.

Kolo Toure was solid but clumsy and was lucky that a poor finish by Pavlyuchenko ensured his mistake was not costly.

I still think Arsenal are a top four team—if not a top two team—but they need to up their game to a whole new level. They need to find consistency and not have Eboue in their lineup.

Things should get brighter as many injured players are returning.
