Belmont Stakes 2012 Odds: Contenders with Enticing Odds to Avoid

Adam WellsJun 6, 2018

I'll Have Another was such a prohibitive favorite to win the Belmont Stakes, so when he went down with an injury, everything got thrown into a state of flux. New odds came out, with some heavy underdogs starting to get a lot more love than they otherwise would have.

The field is down to just 11 horses, with a few enticing names up top and a lot of uncertainty after them.

Here is a breakdown of the horses with enticing odds who will not be worth your time or money when the race starts.

TOP NEWS

152nd Kentucky Derby
Colts Jaguars Football

Dullahan (9-5)

Taking over the odds-on-favorite role occupied by I'll Have Another prior to his injury, Dullahan is going to be the most talked about horse actually participating in the Belmont Stakes. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby, so he has a good track record of success in big races.

However, to move him to a better than 2-1 favorite is quite a jump for Dullahan. He is worthy of the No. 1 spot in this race because of his history, but to be getting that much love is a bit over the top.

Dullahan strikes me as the classic over-bet. His odds are going to be the best you will find this weekend—just don't be surprised if he doesn't win, place or show.

Union Rags (3-1)

Speaking of benefiting from I'll Have Another's absence, Union Rags is back to being one of the horses under the spotlight in a big way. He was one of the favorites at the Kentucky Derby, only to finish a very disappointing seventh.

That has been the story of Union Rags' career—poor finish after poor finish. There have been wins mixed in, and he certainly looks the part of a dominant thoroughbred. He just doesn't put it all together in this kind of race.

If you are just going over names and odds to put money on, Union Rags is going to break your heart. He did it at Churchill Downs, and don't expect something a lot better at the Belmont.

Street Life (8-1)

Before I'll Have Another went down, I probably would have told you that Street Life was a good darkhorse candidate to win the Belmont Stakes.

Now that he is near the top of the favorites list, I can't help but look at him being a favorite and expect massive disappointment. Street Life is the kind of horse who has thrived on shorter courses, but when you start to increase the length of the track, he starts to fall apart.

The Belmont Stakes is easily the longest Triple Crown race, so his prospects for this race do not look very good. Perhaps he could surprise—just don't say I didn't warn you.

 No. 1 Street Life (8-1)
 No. 2 Unstoppable U (20-1)
 No. 3 Union Rags (3-1)
 No. 4 Atigun (15-1)
 No. 5 Dullahan (9-5)
 No. 6 Ravelo's Boy (30-1)
 No. 7 Five Sixteen (30-1)
No. 8 Guyana Star Dweej (30-1)
 No. 9 Paynter (7-2)
 No. 10 Optimizer (15-1)
No. 11 I'll Have Another (Scratched)
 No. 12 My Adonis (15-1)
