Boise State's Recruiting High School Prom Affair Is Over: Let's Dance BCS
On Feb 6th, I googled many news articles etc like many college football addicts to see what’s up with the Boise State Broncos.
Well there was nothing new from a select number of quality writers who know and respect BSU football.
However, I found an article, "Ranking The Recruiting Classes" by College Football News Staff. Yes, that’s right, staff! I wouldn’t have wanted to pen my name on that article either.
So what was it exactly that tweaked this writer’s morning attitude? It was nothing more then the steady comedic BCS malarkey.
As one would imagine the article had all of the BCS Queens sitting on their thrones. Ohio State was on the top of the pyramid, and USC seated directly below her, and so on and so on.
Don’t get me wrong USC did do well in the recruiting war and deservedly so was ranked.
But real football fans know that the cream does not rise to the top in Ohio, not since Woody Hayes departure at Ohio State anyway. The cream does rise in California especially when one considers the likes of USC.
It is not any other California School or other BCS Prom Queen who dominate the California recruiting circuit. It is Boise States Bronco’s that are listed second in California recruiting, just below the Trojans of Southern Cal.
It is a fact that Southern California is the second largest media market and the country's third largest talent-producing state in the country.
With the promise of at least a wink from the NFL and to be groomed by one of the finest coaches this side of Bill Walsh in Pete Carroll, playing for the USC Trojans for California bred stock is just a reality.
However, as pointed out the Bronco’s recruit heavily in California, and do not end up with USC droppings.
For example, Joe Southwick the future star quarterback for the Broncos who will be openly competing for the right to start as a red shirt freshman in 2010 was selected as California first team all state this senior year.
That means the extremely talented Barkley was beat out of that honor due to Southwick’s accomplishments. By the way Southwick’s almost 4,000 yards passing and 36 touchdowns his senior season was no fluke, he is highly accurate, only intercepted 11 times.
Southwick is also consistent. In his junior year, he threw 35 touchdowns for 3,185 yards. That is almost 7,000 yards and over 70 touchdowns with only 19 interceptions in two years.
It would be easy to keep going on Southwick, but the state of California also brought to Bronco football six more star athletes this recruiting season.
These super kids are John Michael Davis, a linebacker from Las Flores, CA, and Jonathan Brown, a safety from Alameda, CA who almost single handedly took a normally non-winning high school team to a 13 and 0 season.
Charles Leno from San Leandro, CA is being sized as a potential to fill the shoes of former Bronco and now NFL star Ryan Clady.
Trevor Peterson, a tight end from El Dorado High School in Camino, California is a tremendously talent young man who is destined to be a crowd pleaser.
Nicholas Alexander from Los Angeles, California via Crenshaw High school is a power to be at Defensive End and is the grandson of former Minnesota Viking DE Carl Eller.
Completing the star-studded list is Winston Venable from San Rafael, California, who can play a true safety as well as the new safety/linebacker hybrid according to Boise state coach Chris Petersen.
The absurdity of the College Football News rankings is obvious. From top to bottom of the list is ridiculous.
Please someone with half a brain mention that “Boise State is ahead of itself in years.” Enter ESPN’s Graham Watson.
Ms. Watson who has way more than half a brain did just that in her recent article, Boise State's success is beyond its years.
Graham Watson acknowledged BSU saying:
“Boise State has been playing FBS football for just over a decade, but in that time it's had more success than some programs have had in a century. And with that success, some of the country's better recruits have flocked to the infamous blue turf in search of a program that not only wins consistently, but has become a big-time name despite its small-time atmosphere.”
It cannot be said better than that, and so in conclusion, GO BRONCOS!
