Liverpool Players to Watch at Euro 2012
Eight players make the voyage from Anfield in search of international glory.
Liverpool's stars are spread across three national teams and three separate groups. Each goes with their own respective ambitions and dreams.
One Red makes the trip as the tournament favorite. Two more will wear the captain's armband for their country. Many more have a chip on their shoulder and something to prove.
How will they do this summer and what effect will it have on the club in the fall? All of this and more is covered.
Denmark
1 of 3Liverpudlian: Daniel Agger (Center-Back)
Outlook: 101-1 to win the tournament.
Agger captains an underdog Danish side. Premier League fans will recognize the likes of Nicklas Bendtner from his days at Arsenal along with Agger.
The bigger name to watch though will be Christian Eriksen. He is a midfield playmaker with a bright future and could launch himself into superstardom with a big showing.
The team got a horrible draw in the Group of Death. Agger will have to be at his best if they are to stand a chance.
Effect on Anfield
The Danish center-back has a huge role to play under Brendan Rodgers.
He is expected to fit the mold of Carles Puyol. He is expected to play the ball at his feet and direct movement for the whole unit.
Some big results for his national team would go a long way toward instilling some confidence as he prepares to shoulder the increased burden.
Spain
2 of 3Liverpudlian: Pepe Reina (Goalkeeper)
Outlook: 3.75-1 to win the tournament
After a difficult club campaign in 2011/12, Reina will be looking forward to the summer with great expectations.
Spain is the tournament favorite.
He likely will not see the field as he sits behind both Victor Valdes and Iker Casillas. Depth is not a concern for Spain to say the least.
Effect on Anfield
A relaxing month might be just what the doctor ordered for the Liverpool keeper.
He endured a difficult season in which the entire defense faced tremendous pressure from the lack of offensive output.
England
3 of 3Liverpudlians: Martin Kelly (Defense), Glen Johnson (Right-Back), Jordan Henderson (Midfield), Steven Gerrard (Midfield), Stewart Downing (Left Wing), Andy Carroll (Forward)
Outlook: 15-1 to win the tournament
It is hard to assess England's chances.
On the one hand they have a roster loaded with talent. On the other, they have a new coach, mounting injury troubles and plenty of off-the-field drama.
Effect on Anfield
Gerrard wears the captain's armband. Further, this is perhaps the last opportunity for his generation of Englishmen.
Both of which mean that he expects a lot from himself. Hopefully he can turn that pressure into form and carry the team to greatness.
The other five face the task of validating their inclusion.
Johnson looks to prove that he deserves a starting place. Downing, Henderson, Kelly and Carroll will look to prove that they deserve to be there.
Should each player respectively perform, it will pay a tremendous confidence dividend.
