Mexico vs Guyana: El Tri Will Dominate Golden Jaguars, Win Group B Easily

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

Coming off a 2-0 upset victory over Brazil, Mexico will be looking to keep Guyana from notching an upset of their own.

The two teams meet in the semifinal round of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying Friday, June 8 at 8 p.m. ET. Mexico is not going to have a hard time getting past the Golden Jaguars with an easy victory thanks to their superior talent and playmaking.

Guyana is just happy to be in this position. Their national football team hasn't seen much success in their history, and have been unable to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup or the World Cup since they were established as British Guiana way back in 1921.

Mexico, on the other hand, is quickly becoming one of the most feared teams on the international stage. Their 2-0 victory over Brazil was more than just a win, it was a statement that El Tri won't be backing down from the best in the world anytime soon.

The two teams are part of Group B, along with El Salvador and Costa Rica. Mexico is clearly the class of the group, as well as the class of North, Central and South America (excluding Brazil). They are leaps and bounds ahead of their competition in this qualifying stage and should have no problem advancing to the later stages.

Surely, many will say that their victory over Brazil was a fluke, but El Tri wiped the Brazilians up and down the pitch in that match. No matter what you believe about that match, it's impossible to deny that Mexico is on the cusp of being able to compete for a World Cup title.

The Mexican offense has been their greatest strength in their last few matches. For all the praise given to Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Giovani Dos Santos has been the main man for Jose Manuel de la Torre's club over these last few weeks. His goal against Brazil was a spectacular display of skill and precision (watch the video to see).

After a somewhat disappointing showing against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mexico's defense bounced back against the Brazilians. Severo Meza made it seem like Neymar wasn't even on the pitch, except for when he got into a little tiff with him towards the end of the match. If Meza can shut down Neymar, surely he can shut down whatever Guyana is going to throw at him in the form of Leon Cort, Ricky Shakes and Chris Nurse.

Mexico's counterattack worked well for them against Brazil. If that strategy worked against the super speedy Brazilians, it's going to let them run circles around Guyana, Costa Rica and El Salvador. Chicharito, Dos Santos and Aldo de Nigris are superior counterattackers and work perfectly with a Mexican defense that makes precise, long passes to spark the transition to offensive attack.

Guyana will most likely try to play a defensive possession game and hope to grab a draw with their superior competition. The dangerous part about that is there is plenty of room forever when a team hangs back in the middle of the field or back in their own end, hoping to keep their opposition from scoring. This match isn't going to go well for Guyana no matter how they play it.

Group B certainly knows that Mexico is the favorite to emerge from the semifinal round, as they are just too talented and polished to play down to their competition.

They're young, hungry and trying to make a name for themselves as one of the best teams in the world. Don't expect El Tri to show any mercy on the competition until they have run through the field and successfully qualified for the 2014 World Cup.
