College Football: 2013 Weekly Recruiting Roundup May 31- June 7

Michael FelderJun 7, 2012

There were two big fish that committed this weekend, and it would only make sense that the two committed to arch-rivals in the college football world.

Jaylon Smith was the first domino to fall; the big time defender from Indiana committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This is a huge deal for Brian Kelly, and a push for the defensive side of the football that was backed up by Isaac Rochell committing to Notre Dame this week as well.

However, Notre Dame's big rival, USC, would not be outdone this week. The Trojans landed Su'a Cravens, one of the nation's top athletes at the wide receiver and safety positions (via the LA Times). Cravens is the type of player the defense can be built around. And at the safety position, with the loss of TJ McDonald, look for USC to give him a look on defense first.

The University of Southern California has been tearing it up from a quality standpoint, while Michigan has been building their class around quality and quantity. The Wolverines picked up three more commitments this week to bring their total class size to 21 entering the summer season. Maurice Hurst Jr., a defensive lineman, has decided to pledge allegiance to the Michigan Wolverines and that is a big get for the defensive side of the ball (via the Detroit Free Press).

To go alongside Hurst, Henry Poggi joins the 2013 class on the defensive line. The third commitment, a long snapper by the name of Scott Sypniewski, is from Illinois, and you never know how bad you need a deep snapper until you don't have one (both reported by the Detroit Free Press).

Also in the Big Ten, we have Penn State shaking the tree to get some fruit to fall into their lap. William Fuller, a Philadelphia wide receiver, joins Bill O'Brien's quest to right the ship at Penn State, according to Penn Live. For the defensive side of the ball, Neiko Robinson climbs on-board the Nittany Lions commitment list; he's from Florida, a state that does not really factor in to the Penn State recruiting plan, traditionally (via AL.com).

Speaking of Florida, the Florida State Seminoles have added Ira Denson to their 2013 haul (via Tallahassee.com). Denson is a big-bodied offensive lineman that will help Florida State continue to grow their depth as they rebuild their offensive line.

Texas is another big state for recruiting, and the Longhorns prove that with their commitment from Erik Huhn (from the Dallas Morning News).

Huhn is a defensive back out of Cebolo Steele, and while he helps Mack Brown and staff, the big news out of Texas is not a commitment, but a decommitment. Ricky Seals-Jones, the big athlete from outside of Houston, has reopened his recruitment and that means Baylor, Texas A&M and LSU are now in play in addition to the Longhorns.

LSU would love to get the services of Seals-Jones for 2013. This week the Bayou Bengals added three more to their mix. Frank Herron, Kyrion Parker and Kennard Swanson all pledged allegiance to Les Miles and the staff in Baton Rouge (per The Times-Picayune).

Also in the SEC West we see Auburn getting a commitment from Jahmere Irvin-Sills (via AL.com). Irvin-Sills is a defensive back from Maryland who has never even visited The Plains, but saw fit to commit to the Tigers this week.

The Tigers' partner in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry, the Georgia Bulldogs, picked up two big commitments this week as well. Uriah LeMay, brother of current Dawgs quarterback Christian LeMay, committed to the Bulldogs out of Charlotte, North Carolina (via AJC.com). The Bulldogs also added Reggie Davis, another highly touted wide receiver, to their big 2013 class.

To wrap things up for the week, we stay in the SEC and head to Knoxville. The Volunteers picked up two commitments from teammates at the Christian Academy Of Knoxville. Brett Kendrick, an offensive linemen, committed early in the week to Tennessee (via Nooga.com). Kendrick's teammate, Josh Smith, was another immediate commit (via the Chattanooga Times Free Press); both of the young men had Tennessee on their minds, even before the offers came in.
