UFC: What Are the Rules on Feet/Toes in or on the Fence?
A puzzling fact came up on MMA Forum after the UFC Fight Night 17 tonight.
During the fight between Cain Velasquez and Denis Stojnic, when Stojnic had his toes in the fence, the ref pulled his leg forcing Denis to have his toes removed from it (the fence).
Shortly after this, the fight was declared a TKO with Velasquez being declared the winner.
Since I did not have a favorite in the fight, the toes thing made no impression on me.
Then I received a Google alert that was titled "Keep Your Toes Out of the Fence," and was curious to see what in the heck that meant.
Well, on the NNA Forum, a debate was in progress about what the rules were about the use of feet and toes on the side of the cage.
Every MMA fan has heard the refs yell at fighters warning them to let go of the fence—a big no-no and not allowed!
This is cited as the reason that Tito Ortiz lost to Rashad Evans. Tito had points deducted for grabbing the fence.
Yet fighters frequently "wall walk" and turn themselves over by using their feet. Fighters can and have used their toes to grasp the fence to pull with, or to reverse their position.
So is this illegal or not? Why did this ref remove Denis's toes from the fence?
No one is supposed to reverse their position by grabbing the fence using their fingers, or prevent being taken down by grabbing the fence with their hands either.
Are toes through the fence a big violation, too? Is there a rule that currently exists to regulate the use of feet on the fence and if there is not, should there be one?
Anyone with knowledge of the existence of rules regarding this, please sign in and help Grandma Dee out.
I sure would appreciate it!
