Belmont Stakes 2012 Entries: Final Listing of Horses for Saturday's Event
The field of 12 for the Belmont Stakes has been officially set, so now it's time to get to know our competitors for Saturday's race.
Here you'll find a complete list of participating horses, their odds to win and the positions they grabbed at this morning's post position draw. All odds are courtesy of the Belmont Stakes official website.
Post Position No. 1: Street Life
Trainer: Chad C. Brown
Jockey: Jose Lezcano
Odds: 15-1
Street Life is similar to the favorite, I'll Have Another, in terms of his closing ability. He typically hangs back—just like I'll Have Another did at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes—and makes his charge down the stretch.
There aren't many horses with true, raw speed that will be running in the Belmont, so his usual closing strategy won't bode well for him on Saturday. Street Life has been consistently improving in each of his recent races, but we'll have to wait and see if he has enough to win the Belmont.
Post Position No. 2: Unstoppable U
Trainer: Kenneth McPeek
Jockey: Junior Alvarado
Odds: 30-1
Unstoppable U won the last race he ran in, the Belmont allowance. While McPeek would much rather trade that win for a win at the real Belmont Stakes, it's always good for a horse's camp to have confidence heading into a big race.
This horse has only ran two races in his career, so it's not likely that he has the ability to end I'll Have Another's Triple Crown bid.
Post Position No. 3: Union Rags
Trainer: Michael Matz
Jockey: John Velazquez
Odds: 6-1
Union Rags was one of the favorites when he ran in the Kentucky Derby, but that led to a seventh-place finish at the Run for the Roses. He didn't have a clean start at the Derby, and that might not be an anomaly either. He has won just one Grade 1 race in his career, so don't expect him to outrun I'll Have Another.
Post Position No. 4: Atigun
Trainer: Kenneth McPeek
Jockey: Julien Leparoux
Odds: 30-1
Atigun has managed to emerge victorious in just three of his nine starts. That's not as bad as a horse can do, but it certainly doesn't look like the record of a Belmont-winning caliber colt.
Staying away from this horse may be in the best interest of bettors, as he has only won a maiden race and two optional claimers. That resume doesn't stack up well against some of the other thoroughbreds in the field.
Post Position No. 5: Dullahan
Trainer: Dale Romans
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Odds: 5-1
Dullahan won' be hurt all that much by his unfortunate post position draw because the Belmont is one-and-a-half miles long, so Castellano will have an easier time getting his horse into position than he would on a shorter track.
Not much was made of his third-place finish at Churchill Downs thanks to the performances of Bodemeister and I'll Have Another, but he ran a good race. He could make a run for place or show, but it's going to be tough for him to beat out I'll Have Another.
Post Position No. 6: Ravelo's Boy
Trainer: Manuel Azpurua
Jockey: Alex Solis
Odds: 50-1
Ravelo's Boy hasn't ran in a race since he finished in fifth place at the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby three months ago. He hasn't won a race this year and not much is being made of this horse since he entered into the field, and rightfully so, as it doesn't seem he has much business in the race.
Still, you never know. He might surprise us.
Post Position No. 7: Five Sixteen
Trainer: Dominick Schettino
Jockey: Rosie Napravnik
Odds: 50-1
Five Sixteen will be ridden by the only woman jockey in the Belmont, so that makes for some exciting headlines surrounding Schettino's horse. Unfortunately, his on-track abilities won't bring those same headlines.
This horse hasn't impressed in his career, as it took him five races to get his first win. Jumping from the allowance ranks to Grade 1 seldom results in success. That trend is likely to continue here.
Post Position No. 8: Guyana Star Dweej
Trainer: Doodnauth Shivmangal
Jockey: Undecided
Odds: 50-1
A one-win horse heading into one of thoroughbred racing's biggest spectacles can hardly be given a shot to come away with a win. Guyana Star Dweej has never been able to beat a horse that has won a race, now has ran in a Grade 1 race.
The odds speak for themselves here, and 50-1 accurately reflects his true chances to win.
Post Position No. 9: Paynter
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Jockey: Mike Smith
Odds: 8-1
The good news for Bob Baffert is that Paynter is coming off a win at Pimlico race track. The bad news for Baffert is that this horse has only been in one Grade 1 race in his career.
His odds are definitely benefiting from the fact that he is a Baffert-trained colt, so don't expect him to finish nearly as well as his odds say he should. On top of that, he lost to I'll Have Another at the Santa Anita Derby back in April.
Post Position No. 10: Optimizer
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey: Corey Nakatani
Odds: 30-1
Optimizer finished 11th in the Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Preakness Stakes. He didn't even come close to mediocrity in either race, finishing 12 lengths and 15.5 lengths behind, respectively.
Lukas-trained horses have won 13 Triple Crown races, but that number won't go up to 14 after the Belmont Stakes.
Post Position No. 11: I'll Have Another
Trainer: Doug O'Neill
Jockey: Mario Gutierrez
Odds: 4-5
I'll Have Another comes in as the odds favorite to win the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes this Saturday. He'll have a lot of fans pulling for him, as it's always nice to see an underdog story end in victory.
Don't expect I'll Have Another to run away from the field because that's not the type of race Gutierrez and his horse run. His pace will depend on how the rest of the field starts. If they start slow, he'll hang back. If they start fast, he'll likely kick it up a bit to stay in striking distance.
Post Position No. 12: My Adonis
Trainer: Kelly Breen
Jockey: Ramon Dominguez
Odds: 20-1
The last horse to join the field, My Adonis made it an even dozen at the Belmont Stakes. Despite his late arrival, he's been looked up favorably by the odds makers.
He's owned by George and Lori Hall, who also own the 2011 Belmont winner, Ruler on Ice. It's not likely, but this could be one of those instances when lightning strikes twice.
