Class of 2010: University of Michigan Targets: Quarterbacks
Michigan landed two talented dual-threat QBs this year in Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson.
It will be a deep year for dual-threat QBs next year, with the state of Michigan possessing two of the very best in Devin Gardner and Robert Bolden.
They are the best bets to join Michigan along with out-of-staters Christian Green, Malik Stokes (the younger brother of Michigan signee Je’Ron Stokes), Cornelius Jones and Stephen Morris.
The below prospects are listed in approximate order of ability.

As a junior QB on a 12-2 state finalist team, he passed for 1,886 yards and 26 TDs. He completed 58% of his passes and was intercepted seven times. Gardner also rushed for 1,401 yards (12ypc) and 22 touchdowns.

As a freshman starter at QB he passed for 800 yards and 7 TDs. He has a great frame, strong arm and excellent escapability. He is very raw, however, and needs to improve his accuracy and mechanics. Moncman wandered from player to player, stopping briefly for a hug, then moved off in another random direction for another random encounter. Once he spotted some reporters, however, he got right to the point. “What do you call him?” Moncman said of Anthony Gonzalez, his junior quarterback and defensive back. “He’s Superman.” Gonzalez carried an AAAA-record 33 times in the title game. His one-handed, rolling interception ended the overtime game. Gonzalez’s ability and versatility landed him a first-team spot on The Associated Press Class AAAA all-state team and the player of the year award. Gonzalez rushed for 1,697 yards and 24 touchdowns and passed for 1,580 yards. He scored three touchdowns in the state championship game, including the eventual game-winner in overtime. “He’s done this kind of thing every week,” Moncman said. “What blows my mind is that he still doesn’t have a scholarship offer yet. The film was enough to attract attention. “I was shocked,” Jones said of the offer. “After I sent the tape, no, I wasn’t surprised at all,” Brown said. “I can see who he’s going to be in this offense in two years.” Brown said Jones’ speed helped his stock quickly rise. In the offense that Brown wants to utilize, Jones (6-foot-3, 185 pounds) will be a mobile quarterback, similar to the kind expected to be used by head coach Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. Jones hasn’t played football in the Spartanburg system for a couple of years after he got into some trouble, he said. He was one of the players that Brown went out into the community and got back in school during the spring. “He’s given me another chance, and I want to make sure I make the most of it,” Jones said. Jones said he is working hard to learn the offense and how to be a leader for the coming season. With the first offer on the table, Jones and Brown said they expect more to come. “I think he’s a guy that you have to get your name in the pot now,” Brown said. “(Michigan was) the first ones to offer him, and I’ll tell you, he is appreciative. People are going to have to do some recruiting now to get him.”

The University of Michigan Football Camp is the nation’s largest football camp with nearly 2,000 prep football players participating. As an incoming junior and the starting quarterback at Miami’s Monsignor Pace High School, Morris went to the camp to learn more about the vaunted spread offense that Michigan will be running under new Head Football Coach Rich Rodriguez. However, when the five day camp concluded, Morris came away with much more than a few new plays, as he won both contests that were competed for among the 150 quarterbacks who attended the camp. Morris first became the Smokehouse Champion, which is given to the winner of the 40 yard indoor race that is competed among only those in the same position who previously recorded the fastest 40 yard sprint times. Morris won with a time of 4.62. In addition, on the camp’s last day, Morris received the coveted Top Gun award, after turning in the highest score based on multiple tests of passing accuracy and distance. Morris is the first high school junior to win both competitions and wowed the audience of college head coaches with throws measuring over 70 yards. Standing at 6’2” and weighing 185 pounds, Morris looks forward to another successful fall season at Monsignor Pace. Last year, Pace’s Von Thomas was the Miami Herald’s 3A-1A first-team QB. Kinne, Justin Johnson, Lamar Harris, David Snow. The Buckeyes’ record over the last five years is 63-5 with a state championship in 2004 and a state finalist finish last season. So, the word “rebuild” is not in head coach Jeff Traylor’s vocabulary.Reload is more like it. But this year, especially on offense, might be different with just five returning starters and only one on offense.Traylor doesn’t seem worried, considering his lone returnee on offense is quarterback Darian Godfrey, who burst onto the scene in 2007 as a sophomore.”He’s a different kid than what I dealt with last year as a sophomore,” Traylor said. “He’s taken control of the field, you can tell he’s the leader. Every rep he runs is as hard as he can.”Godfrey passed for 2,727 yards and 38 touchdowns last year in leading Gilmer to the Class 3A Division I state finals. But that’s in the past, as Traylor is quick to point out.”He’d be the first to tell you he played with 10 great players last year,” he said.”This year he lost those 10, so we’ll lean on him more for leadership.”Godfrey has taken on the responsibility that comes with being a returning standout.”(I needed to get better at) handling adversity,” Godfrey said. “(Last year) I would get down and let the team know I was down, and I didn’t want them to see that.”When things are going down, we just need to go on to the next play.”Godfrey (6-1, 200) also attended junior camps at Texas and Oklahoma, which he feels has him in position to have an even better season this year.As Traylor mentioned, a lot is expected of his quarterback with so many new faces. But Godfrey’s confident in the task at hand. “It’s not really a big adjustment,” Godfrey said of breaking in new players. “They all were in the program last year, they just didn’t get varsity snaps. I worked with them in practice.”Being the quarterback in Gilmer bears high expectations. Just look at past signal-callers Johnson and Kinne, who both took their games to the next level after delivering during high school.Traylor expects a lot from his QBs. “He’s got to be dependable first and foremost, you’ve got to have a kid you can count on,” he said. “He’s got be tough, he’s got to be able to throw the football and he’s got to be an athlete.”We try to put one of our more dependable and better athletes there every year.”Traylor admits it’s difficult to place Godfrey in a historical perspective in comparison to other quarterbacks in the program’s history.”We’ve never had one play as a sophomore,” he said. “We’ll see when it’s all over with. Right now, he’s on pace with a lot of them, but it’s not over with yet.”(His) goal is to win a championship and it always has been as long as I’ve known that kid. He’s still upset that we got beat in last year’s championship game.””
