Belmont Stakes 2012 Post Positions: Who Got Screwed with Their Positions?
Now that the post positions have been determined at the 2012 Belmont Stakes, it's time to take a look at who found themselves in historically poor positions.
Historically, post position hasn't meant as much at the Belmont Stakes as at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.
Nonetheless, there have been some post positions that you would rather not have at Belmont Park.
Here's a look at the contenders who found themselves on the wrong side of the draw on Wednesday.
3. I'll Have Another (Post No. 11)
Since 2002, the No. 11 post has placed just once. Still, that shouldn't detract bettors from going with Triple Crown contender I'll Have Another. Having a strong workhorse has appeared to mean more than having good post position at the Belmont Stakes throughout the years. In that sense, you can't stray from I'll Have Another, who closed strong at both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.
2. My Adonis (Post No. 12)
The No. 12 post has placed just once since 2002. And while My Adonis has three top-three finishes this year, he's not in the same discussion as I'll Have Another. He's in a historically poor post position and doesn't appear to have the ability to make up for it.
1. Optimizer (Post No. 10)
The No. 10 post is the only post that hasn't placed in the last 10 years. On top of that, Optimizer hasn't been particularly impressive this year. He finished 11th at the Kentucky Derby and sixth at the Preakness Stakes. He's not the type of workhorse that can make up for his poor post position. I don't see why you would bet on him.
