Justin Blackmon's DUI Arrest a Bad Omen for Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars' first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Justin Blackmon, blew a .24 according to The Florida Times-Union when he was pulled over and arrested in Oklahoma in the wee hours of Sunday morning. That means that he had literally no idea who or where he was, what he was doing or the repercussions that would follow his dubious actions.
People make mistakes, especially 22-year-old men who are fresh out of the ranks of college football and heading for a career in the NFL. Many people learn from their mistakes and do their best not to make the same mistake again. Blackmon has yet to learn from his mistakes, as this is the second time in the last 20 months that he is facing a DUI charge.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. That's how the Jaguars should be dealing with this situation (even though Blackmon technically fooled Oklahoma State the first time), because repeat offenders aren't to be taken lightly, especially when it comes to drunk driving.
Apparently, Blackmon is doing everything in his power to mess up the chance of a lifetime of playing in the NFL. I'm sure he didn't start his night with the intention of getting seriously drunk then driving home, but it wouldn't be irrational to believe that he began his night with the intention to get drunk. Why can't he just leave his car elsewhere if he is unable to control himself in regards to driving when he's drunk?
This has to raise a much larger red flag for the Jaguars than if Blackmon was caught doing some other illegal act. Say that he was caught violating the league's substance abuse policy against marijuana use. That's not good, and it's against the league's rules, but it doesn't put his life in danger, nor does it put other people's lives in danger.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, this is going to impact Blackmon's contract:
"Sounds like the Jaguars can and will give first-round pick Justin Blackmon a smaller and deferred signing bonus, less guaranteed money.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) June 4, 2012"
The most recent incident involving Blackmon is a very bad omen for an organization that is so terribly in need of some good news. It is the complete opposite way that the Jaguars community wanted to begin the Shahid Khan and Mike Mularkey era of the franchise.
It is not yet known what will happen to Blackmon in terms of his prospective discipline by the NFL or what legal action will be taken against him by Payne County prosecutors, but he certainly can't be happy with the situation he has gotten himself into.
Once is a fluke, twice is a trend (just in case you were looking for another cliche). The Jags are hoping that the two DUIs on Blackmon's record are just anomalies and not a developing trend. If he has a problem, they need to get him some help. If he doesn't have a problem, they need to be proactive about the situation and help him out, or else bad things may be in store for the hopeful wide receiver.
