Laquon Treadwell Names His Top 7 Schools, Other Michigan Recruiting Updates
When 4-star wide receiver Laquon Treadwell (Crete, IL) recently announced he would likely end his recruitment either later this summer or during the upcoming football season, the 6'3", 183-pounder did not inform the media about the schools still in the running for his services—until Monday afternoon.
Michigan, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have been mentioned the most by Treadwell over the past several months and there are four other schools that made the most recent cut for the nation's No. 39 overall prospect and fifth-ranked wide receiver (according to the rankings at Rivals.com).
"Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Michigan, Illinois, Notre Dame and USC," Treadwell told Jared Shanker of ESPN.com.
A recent trip to Illinois re-ignited Treadwell's interest in playing closer to home and with Rivals250 dual-threat quarterback Aaron Bailey (Bolingbrook, IL), who has been committed to the Fighting Illini since April 26th.
"We had a great time yesterday," Treadwell told OrangeandBlueNews.com about his Saturday visit. "We went over the offense and I got to talk to the receivers coach. We did a little tour and did a photo shoot with Aaron Bailey acting like he was throwing me the ball, so that was cool."
The Crete Monee High School standout also intends to visit Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, in addition to a return visit to Notre Dame.
Although this update might catch Michigan fans by surprise, there is no reason to panic. Treadwell has been high on the Wolverines from the beginning of his recruitment and that has not changed even with the release of his top seven.
Anything is possible, but until a visit to one of those schools blows Treadwell away, Michigan should still be the team to beat. Click here to find out why.
Other News
Michigan's most recent verbal pledges Henry Poggi (Baltimore, MD) and Maurice Hurst Jr. (Westwood, MA), who are both defensive tackles, filled the biggest void in the Wolverines' 2013 recruiting class.
However, Michigan is still lacking a speedy running back and appear to be falling further behind with one of their top targets at the position.
Hermitage High School star running back Derrick Green (Richmond, VA), who became the nation's No. 1 running back and No. 12 overall prospect in the newest edition of the Rivals100, recently discussed when he will begin to eliminate schools and Michigan does not seem to be in his plans.
"I'll have a Top 10 after my unofficial visits this summer," the 5-star prospect said. "And I'll have a Top 5 after my senior season before I start taking official visits. I'll make my decision after my official visits."
The 6'0", 215-pounder who runs the 40-yard dash in under 4.40 seconds did not officially eliminate the Wolverines, however, when asked about which schools were standing out at the moment, he did not mention Michigan.
Another top running back who may come off of Michigan's recruiting board in the near future is the nation's No. 128 overall prospect and 11th-anked player at the position, Jordan Wilkins (Cordova, TN).
The St. Benedict High School tailback may not be able to visit Michigan this weekend due to a scheduling conflict with his ACT test and Wilkins appears to be leaning toward committing to Auburn after they offered in May.
"Auburn is up there now," Wilkins told AuburnSports.com after receiving the offer. "It's happened so quick with them, we'll see what happens. If I go down there and like it a lot, and it's a place I feel comfortable with, then that might be a possibility that I commit." (Note: Auburnsports articles are behind a pay wall.)
Wilkins is also hoping to make a decision sooner rather than later, which could hurt Michigan if the 4-star running back is able to make it to Auburn and not make the trek up to Ann Arbor.
"I want to make my decision sooner rather than the season starting," Wilkins said on Sunday. "I hope I get it done this summer, as soon as I feel like I fit and it's the place, I'm going to commit and end it."
It is unclear where the Wolverines will turn if both Green and Wilkins commit elsewhere. Unfortunately this news puts a bit of a damper on a solid recruiting weekend for Michigan fans.
