Belmont Stakes 2012 Entries: Complete List of Every Horse in Field

Ryan RudnanskyJun 5, 2012

As the Belmont Stakes approaches, everybody's talking about I'll Have Another. You know, that horse that has a chance to win the Triple Crown after two stunning finishes at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

But I'll Have Another isn't a sure thing on Saturday at Belmont Park. Anything can happen, and there are several horses that should give I'll Have Another a run for his money.

Here's a breakdown of the likely field, complete with preliminary odds (via Daily Racing Form).

TOP NEWS

152nd Kentucky Derby

Atigun (30-1)

In nine career starts, Atigun has three victories and one second-place finish. The colt placed fifth in the Arkansas Derby this year and just won the Churchill allowance on May 5. He's widely considered to be a heavy underdog.

Dullahan (5-1)

Dullahan has been a fairly consistent horse the past two years. In nine career starts, he's placed seven times, including two victories. Dullahan had a strong run at the Kentucky Derby this year, finishing third. Make no mistake about it, Dullahan has a shot at the Belmont Stakes.

Five Sixteen (50-1)

Five Sixteen only has six career starts and has yet to run a big race. This will undoubtedly be the biggest race of his career. He's won just once despite being pitted against weaker competition for the most part. It's no wonder he's such a big underdog.

Guyana Star Dweej (50-1)

Like Five Sixteen, Guyana Star Dweej hasn't appeared in any big races. He's had six starts this year, finishing second four times and winning the Aqueduct maiden on April 7. Another heavy underdog.

I'll Have Another (3-5)

The shining horse of the year. I'll Have Another is just one victory away from making history and becoming the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. What has been even more impressive about I'll Have Another is the way he's won. He came from behind down the stretch to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. It's hard to bet against I'll Have Another at this point.

Optimizer (30-1)

It's no wonder Optimizer isn't getting much love heading into the Belmont Stakes. He has just one victory in 11 career starts, and that came in the very first start of his career. The colt placed 11th at the Kentucky Derby and sixth at the Preakness Stakes this year.

Paynter (8-1)

Allow me to PAYNT a picture for you (sorry, couldn't resist). Paynter has two victories and one second-place finish in four career starts. He won at the Pimlico allowance on May 19 and placed fourth at the Santa Anita Derby this year. Oh yeah, and he's a Bob Baffert horse.

Ravelo's Boy (50-1)

In 13 career starts, Ravelo's Boy has placed four times, winning twice. Not exactly the greatest resume. He has one fourth-place finish and two fifth-place finishes this year. I would group him in with Five Sixteen and Guyana Star Dweej at the bottom of the barrel.

Street Life (15-1)

If you're looking for a true dark horse, Street Life may be a good bet. He has two victories in five career starts and finished third at the Peter Pan Stakes in May. Monitor this horse closely leading up to the Belmont Stakes.

Union Rags (6-1)

Headed into the Kentucky Derby, Union Rags was the favorite. He then placed seventh and hasn't raced since. It was a disappointing finish for Union Rags at Churchill Downs, but this horse still has the potential to pull off the victory at Belmont Park.

Unstoppable U (30-1)

Unstoppable who? Why, Unstoppable U, of course. Unstoppable U has two career starts, and has won both times. On the other hand, he didn't work well on Sunday and could scratch.
