Why WWE Must Feature Damien Sandow in Major Feud as Soon as Possible

Nathan GieseJun 7, 2018

The worst-kept secret in the WWE is that the roster is on thin ice right now.

With the sudden suspensions of Randy Orton and Chris Jericho, along with The Miz appearing sporadically due to filming The Marine 3, both Raw and SmackDown are suffering from a diminished roster that was already on the brink of insulting to begin with.

Jericho's absence isn't as big of a factor in all of this, as he is just one somewhat small piece to the puzzle that is the WWE roster of talent.  He only just resurfaced in January and has been pretty secluded on Monday nights.

It's Orton's absence that could spell the biggest amount of trouble for the WWE, as he was one of the biggest faces on Friday nights.

He recently has been kept behind Daniel Bryan, Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio, but there is no denying that Orton's presence brought most of the attention on what has always been considered the B show.  Now that he will be sidelined for the next two months, there is a huge hole to fill on SmackDown.

With Orton out of the picture, who does that leave?

One guy who has really stood out when considering this option was Damien Sandow.

Yes, the Savior to the Masses is the best option to take over for Orton during his suspension for a number of reasons.

First of all, Sandow currently finds himself among a group of newcomers that, really, have no current direction or even a story to follow with.  His appearances consist of walking up to his opponent, telling him he is an ignoramus, initially refusing to fight because of said reason, then beating down his opponent with some hard knees to the sternum, a Russian leg-sweep and his neck-breaker finishing maneuver.

Doesn't sound like much to go off of to judge his talent, but the character itself deserves to be given some time in the spotlight in the near future.

Sandow is a combination of Chris Jericho and Alberto Del Rio, using big words and eloquent speaking to enthrall the audience while also letting you know that he is better than you, making you hate him.

It is a littler harder to judge him based on his appearances thus far as, most of the time, he is only around for about five minutes or so.  Despite this fact, Sandow has already developed a sort of cult following, giving fans a fresh face who many hope can be a big success if given the right opportunity.

Solely basing your impression of Sandow from his short time of SmackDown may be a bit premature, but looking back at some of his work down in FCW, it's fair to assume that, for him, the sky is the limit when it comes to potential for success.

One factor that could keep Sandow from being used correctly in a major feud this quickly would be his resident newcomers and the run they have been on.

Okay, so Brodus Clay, Ryback and Tensai aren't exactly newcomers, as all three had previous stints in the company before being repackaged into different characters, but the point remains as all have come into the company around the same time.

Clay may be undefeated—22-0 currently as the Funkasaurus—but a vast majority of his contests have been squashes against competitors less than desirable in the eyes of WWE creative.

Ryback is used to squash men not even on the roster, making him look even stronger by the sheer fact that he cannot be stopped, even asking to be fed more each match.

Tensai is a mysterious case. He's been pushed on and off since his debut. He went from crushing jobbers to defeating John Cena, back to jobbers, then from pinning WWE Champion CM Punk to not being seen to dominating Sheamus in a handicap match to not being seen on TV since.

He is a special circumstance considering his previous tenure in the company, but a strange case indeed.

Consider those three new guys—then look at Sandow.  Immediately, Sandow has displayed charisma, confidence on the mic and a fairly limited but effective move-set. He has the arrogance and swagger that makes for the perfect heel. The potential is there.

Now is the time to push him to the moon. Push him so fast it would make Alberto Del Rio feel inadequate.

Orton is out of action, and Sheamus is quickly running out of options to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against. As sad as it is to say, it's the truth. Once he is finished with Del Rio, the few options left are Cody Rhodes, who is currently in a feud with Christian for the Intercontinental Championship, and possibly Wade Barrett, who is currently out with an arm injury.

Rarely is there ever a perfect time to push somebody, but that is the case in this situation. Somebody needs to step up in a big way with the absence of Orton, and it needs to be Damien Sandow.

After all, he is the Savior of the Masses. The "Masses" in this case is the WWE Universe, and we desperately need saving at this point.
