Will Strikeforce Gain It's Slice of the Pie?
The following question was recently posed to me. Should Strikeforce, who recently purchased the EliteXC's roster, feature Kimbo Slice as the face, or one of the faces of their franchise? My response should come across as solid as a Chuck Lidell overhand right to the temple. NO!!!
Let's face it. Kimbo Slice is one of the reasons the EliteXC is no more. Not that it's all his fault. I mean, who am I kidding. If someone wanted to take me from a life of street brawls, offer me millions, feed me hand-picked opponents, and make me the poster boy for their company, I'd gladly agree to that proposition.
Unfortunately, for EliteXC and Kimbo Slice, they collectively learned a lesson that any MMA fighter can tell you. It only takes one lucky shot from an opponent to end a fight. And that's exactly what happened to them, literally and figuratively.
What Strikeforce should do, if their smart, is place their better fighters in the lime light. Assuming they still have fighters like Jake Shields, Gina Carrano, "Ruthless" Robby Lawler, Nick Diaz, and K.J. Noons under contract, they should build their fight cards, and ultimately their success around them.
There was already a pretty decent "bad blood" rivalry going on between Lawler, Diaz, and Noons.
I'm not saying ditch Kimbo altogether. But put him in some under card fights against some opponents that are going to test his MMA prowess. Make him fight some Jiu Jitsu guys, some stand up guys, some wrestlers. Make him become the well-rounded MMA fighter that EliteXC wanted him to be. Let's face it. Kimbo's no Brock Lesnar.
Who knows? With any luck, Strikeforce may become a legitimate contender in the MMA world. Right now, the UFC is on top of that mountain, in my opinion. And with the WEC "farm system," they should stay that way for awhile.
But I think there's still enough left on the table for Strikeforce to get their fare share.
