Belmont Stakes 2012: Doping Controversy Will Disappear with Triple Crown Win

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Every movie has that plot twist where everything is going to great, but then it seems like everything is going to fall apart.

Right now, in the week leading up to the 2012 Belmont Stakes, everything looks to be falling apart around potential Triple Crown winner I'll Have Another.

There is a new set of rules for next Saturday's Belmont, according to an AP report on Boston.com, and some believe they are to single out I'll Have Another's trainer Doug O'Neill.

O'Neill's imminent suspension has clouded the animal's press in the recent week although it is unlikely that I'll Have Another has been tampered with.

But as quickly as things turned against I'll Have Another's camp, they could just as quickly turn again should the 3-year-old chestnut colt pull off the unthinkable.

Next Saturday he'll run the "Test of Champions" and has a nearly-even money chance of winning, according to Sportsbook.com.

There are no horses in the field that even come close to what I'll Have Another has accomplished in the past month-plus.

Not Atigun or Paynter. Not Dullahan. Not even Union Rags.

I'll Have Another is in a class all his own.

By next Saturday—heck, by next Wednesday, when the posts are drawn—all will be forgotten and the only focus will be the race.

It's been 33 years since Affirmed last won the Triple Crown, and only 11 other horses have even won the first two legs since.

Should I'll Have Another accomplish this incredible feat—one that would arguably be the most impressive sporting win of the year—the last thing people will be thinking about is his suspended trainer.

In the movie-like scenario that has been I'll Have Another's run thus far, the plot will twist again should he triumph.
