The Memorial Tournament: 3 Things Tiger Woods Needs to Do to Capture the Title

Daniel ZhuJun 7, 2018

After a decent first round of two-under 70, Tiger Woods looks to be back in form.

During Thursday's first round, he carded four birdies and a double bogey on the 18th hole. Despite that slight stumble, Woods played superbly the rest of the afternoon, and seemed to be quite comfortable.

Now, as the week progresses, Woods will have to keep up his solid play in order to capture this title at Muirfield Village.

Let's take a look at a few key things that Woods will have to be able to execute in order for him to win the Memorial Tournament for a fifth time.

Make the Cut

1 of 3

I know I'm stating the obvious, but Woods' first priority should be making it to the weekend. If he can't, then that ends the hopes of him winning anything this week.

Now, if Tiger can play the way he did on Thursday, then Woods would not only make the cut, but also have a chance to vault himself up the leaderboard.

Tiger's play on Thursday's first round was mainly consistent, except for the double bogey on the 18th. He put together an overall stellar round, and that is precisely what he must do on Friday if he is to move on to the weekend.

Keep Putting Well

2 of 3

On Thursday's first round, Tiger Woods putted mostly like the Tiger Woods of old.

He carded 28 putts, and some of the ten and twenty footers that the Tiger Woods of old always made began falling in once again.

If Tiger can keep his putting woes at bay this week, then he will have a good chance to stick around at the top of the leaderboard.

The flat stick will be especially important the last few days because it will be the club that keeps the momentum going, and hold Woods' round together.

Keep Attacking the Par Fives

3 of 3

One of Tiger Woods' greatest strengths is the ability to hit the ball far. He used to be able to blast a drive down the fairway, and easily knock it on the green in two shots, on any par five.

Now, he has lost some of that ability and Woods is making birdie, where he used to have great opportunities for eagles.

Of course, his performance on the par five holes on Thursday was pretty Tiger-like. He birdied three of the four par five holes, and made par on the other.

Three-under par on the par fives isn't bad for Woods, in fact it's actually great considering how he played the last few events.

If Woods is going to win this tournament, then he'll have to capitalize big time on the par fives, and start dropping some eagle putts, or keep making a steady amount of birdies on those particular holes.
