Oregon Football: 5 Things That Will Lead to a 4th Straight Conference Title

Joe PenkalaJun 7, 2018

Oregon has enjoyed a period of success unlike any other in their program's history. Over the past three years, Oregon has been to two Rose Bowls and also made an appearance in the national title game. Along with playing in those big games, the Ducks have won three straight conference titles and placed themselves at the top of the hill.

As Oregon heads into the 2012 season, they are looking to win their fourth straight conference title but face a lot of roadblocks coming up. This season, USC is back to being bowl eligible, and the Ducks are going into the season without LaMichael James and with a new quarterback.

With the season right around the corner, the Ducks will have some challenges to overcome and here are five things that need to happen in order for the Ducks to overcome those obstacles and win a fourth straight conference crown.

No Quarterback Controversy

1 of 5

There is a difference between a quarterback controversy and being confident in the depth you have at the position. After the spring game, it became clear that the Ducks have two solid options at the quarterback position and head coach Chip Kelly will have a difficult decision ahead of him.

One thing that has been constant over the past three years is this team has been united and the last thing they need to deal with is a quarterback controversy.

Receivers Step Up

Everyone knows that the Oregon Ducks can run the ball better than a lot of teams around the nation. What has allowed some good teams to slow down the Oregon offense is the fact that they have loaded up against the run and left Duck receivers in single coverage.

If the Ducks hope to win a fourth conference title, which would entail beating USC at least once, they must have their receivers step up and make their presence known. A vertical passing threat will make the rushing attack even more effective.

Secondary Matches the Expectations

Last year the Ducks secondary went through some growing pains as young players were thrown into the fire and tested early on. The hope from that strategy is that the young players will be experienced and ready to rise up this year.

During conference play, the Ducks will go up against some good quarterbacks including Matt Barkley. If the Ducks hope to win a fourth conference title, the secondary must be ready to step up and match the expectations.

Kenjon Barner Carries the Load

4 of 5

One of the most underrated aspects of LaMichael James was the fact that he was able to carry the load week after week and was extremely durable. With James out of the picture now, the Ducks will turn to Kenjon Barner and look for him to carry the load.

As the Ducks head into 2012, Barner being able to carry the load is extremely important. If Barner can carry the load and stay healthy, the Ducks can continue to put De'Anthony Thomas into the slot and use him in various roles, making the offense even more dangerous.

Dion Jordan Leads the Way

5 of 5

Dion Jordan is expected to have a outstanding season and is considered a top 20 draft pick in next year's NFL draft. The Ducks defensive end is an outstanding athlete who can make life miserable on the conference quarterbacks.

If Jordan is able to keep the heat on quarterbacks like Matt Barkley, then the opportunistic defense can make plays and it will also realize some of the pressure from the young secondary.
