Georgia Football: What You Need to Know About Bulldogs WR Corps

Brian JonesJun 7, 2018

When the Georgia offense is the topic of discussion, the offensive line is the one thing fans want to talk about.

It's understandable because if the Bulldogs do want to reach new heights, the offensive line has to be more consistent.

One position that does not have to worry about being more consistent is the wide receivers' because they came up with big play after big play last year.

But with all the talk about the offensive line, running backs and Aaron Murray, does the average fan know about the receivers on the team?

Here's a closer look at what you need to know about the WR corps.

Malcolm Mitchell Could Be the the Bulldogs MVP

1 of 5

The reason Mitchell could be the MVP for the Bulldogs is that he will have to play both wide receiver and cornerback to start the season. Mitchell, who caught 45 passes for 655 yards, is the Bulldogs deep-threat receiver, but will start the season at corner as well because of a couple of players being suspended.

Mitchell is more suited to play corner but is too much of a playmaker not to be on offense. Once the Bulldogs get Sanders Commings and Branden Smith back from suspension, Mitchell will see less action on defense and help the offense be better than last year.

Tavarres King Is the Leader of the Unit

2 of 5

As good as Mitchell was last year, Tavarres King is the leader of the group because he is the most experienced.

King got off to a slow start last year, but came on strong at the end of the season and ended his 2011 campaign with 47 catches, 705 yards and eight touchdowns.

It seems like King is starting to find his stride and really could be the the go-to guy to start the season, especially with Mitchell playing cornerback.

Marlon Brown Will Have a Strong Senior Year

3 of 5

This is not to say Marlon Brown will have a breakout year, but I think Brown will play better this season than he has his entire career at UGA. Last year, Brown had 15 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games and five starts.

Brown will be the No. 3 or No. 4 receiver this year, and if Aaron Murray puts up better numbers than he did last year, Brown could have 400 to 500 receiving yards.

Brown has shown glimpses of what he's capable of during his career, especially during the Vanderbilt game when he caught four passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Now, Brown just needs to put everything together and prove to the fans that he is not a bust.

Michael Bennett Is the Real Deal

4 of 5

Mitchell had a breakout year, but so did Michael Bennett who caught 32 passes for 320 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Bennett won one of the Newcomer of the Year awards on offense for the Bulldogs, and with his work ethic and natural ability, he is only going to get better.

It's easy to say Bennett is a possession receiver because he's not a deep threat like Mitchell or King.

But like Mitchell and King, Bennett can make big plays. If you don't believe me, take a look at his touchdown catch against Auburn last year.

The WR Corps Could Be the Best in the Conference

5 of 5

With Mitchell, King, Brown and Bennett, along with Chris Conley and Rantavious Wooten, the Bulldogs may have the best group of receivers in the SEC.

Now, Tennessee will have something to say about that because they feature Da'Rick Rogers, and Justin Hunter will make his return to the lineup as well. Arkansas can have the same argument because they have Cobi Hamilton and tight end Chris Gragg, who is one of the better tight ends in the country.

Because Murray loves to spread the football around, there will be five or six different receivers each game that will have an opportunity to make plays. If that happens, it should be a very fun year between the hedges.
