How Winning the Lottery Would Impact Each of the NBA's Bottom Feeders
Regardless of who wins Wednesday's NBA Draft Lottery, the obvious chances are that Kentucky's Anthony Davis will be the first guy taken off the board.
But, while a number of teams would love to get their hands on Davis, he could have a significantly different impact depending on where he lands.
In Charlotte, he'd likely become a party to a protracted rebuilding process that could run him out of town at his first opportunity. In Washington or Cleveland, though, he'd be paired with an elite young point guard who could do wonders for his young career.
The possibilities may not be endless, but there are certainly more than a few worth exploring.
Here's what to expect in the event that the league's very worst teams get a shot at its very best draft pick.
Charlotte Bobcats–Odds: 25 Percent
1 of 6While the Charlotte Bobcats have the best odds of landing the first-overall selection, there's certainly an argument to be made that they might be better off not winning the lottery. It would be awfully hard to turn down Anthony Davis at that first spot, but Charlotte might just be better off with a scorer like Bradley Beal or Thomas Robinson.
The Bobcats' offense was the worst in the NBA by a wide margin. As much as the defense–which gave up 100.9 points per game in the regular season–needs help, the other end of the floor may need even more help.
Still, no one with this franchise will complain about taking Davis. He'll immediately give this club a dangerous interior defense, especially when paired with 19-year-old Bismack Biyombo. Neither Biyombo or Davis is a true NBA center, but they'd still form an incredibly athletic and imposing front line.
As Davis' post skills and shooting improve, he could form a formidable one-two scoring punch with point guard Kemba Walker. The 22-year-old out of UConn averaged over 12 points a game in his rookie campaign, and he should become even more electric with some experience and consistency.
Charlotte will probably be in store for another rough season no matter what happens, but grabbing Davis would put this team in a position to develop an extremely talented young core into a pretty solid team down the road.
Washington Wizards–Odds: 19.9 Percent
2 of 6The Washington Wizards relocated some of its young talent this season by moving Nick Young and JaVale McGee in separate mid-season deals. It shouldn't take them long to restock, though–this time with the kind of players who fit the culture this franchise is attempting to promote.
If the Wizards luck out and move up to the first pick, they would be more than happy to take an elite power forward like Davis. Andray Blatche's career is going in the wrong direction, and Trevor Booker–though young and talented–doesn't have anywhere near Davis' high ceiling.
Nene (who was acquired from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for McGee) is neither the shot-blocker nor rebounder that Davis has proven to be. Washington would benefit tremendously from the added length and athletic presence inside.
Much like Charlotte, the Wizards would still have a lot of work to do.
The good news is that John Wall still hasn't scratched the surface of his upside, and this team has some young talent like Booker, Kevin Seraphin, Chris Singleton and Jordan Crawford. With someone like Davis in the fold, Washington could probably afford to trade some of that young talent for a veteran to put on the wing.
In that event, this team could improve sooner rather than later.
Cleveland Cavaliers–Odds: 13.4 Percent
3 of 6After watching franchise player and future legend LeBron James take his presence to South Beach, the Cleveland Cavaliers are probably due for some good luck.
Unlike the Charlotte Bobcats and Washington Wizards, the Cavaliers might not be as much of a lock to take Anthony Davis. The team already has Anderson Varejao and 2011 pick Tristan Thompson in the paint, and it has pressing problems on the wing that guys like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Bradley Beal would instantly solve.
That said, if the club did take Davis, it would dramatically upgrade its interior rotation and potentially find itself in a position to trade Varejao or Thompson for a veteran scorer.
In just about any scenario, the Cavaliers will get better. Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving proved to be as NBA-ready as they come, and this club is in prime position to add key pieces via free agency over the next couple of offseasons.
New Orleans Hornets–Odds: 13.7 Percent
4 of 6Besides their two lottery selections, the New Orleans Hornets should also have a full year of Eric Gordon should the restricted free agent return. Gordon was limited by injury to just nine games this season, so the 23-year-old's return to full health will almost be like acquiring a third lottery pick–only better.
Needless to say, landing the first pick in June's draft would be an absolute coup.
The Hornets have solid players like Trevor Ariza and Jarrett Jack, but they could certainly use a potential superstar like Anthony Davis patrolling the paint. Carl Landy and Chris Kaman are both free agents, and Emeka Okafor is a somewhat overpriced 29-year-old.
Whether this club lands the first overall pick or not, it could undergo a rapid turnaround in the next season or two. As their young talent hits its stride, New Orleans will surprise the people who remember them only by their sup-par 2011-12 campaign.
Sacramento Kings–Odds: 7.6 Percent
5 of 6Few teams would benefit more from a lottery surprise than the Sacramento Kings.
Already stocked with impressive youngsters like Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins, a defense-first big man like Anthony Davis would instantly improve a defense that ranked dead last in the NBA this season. As good as Cousins is at scoring and rebounding, he could certainly use an interior defender at his side.
Sacramento is a long way from fielding a team with anything resembling a winning pedigree, but this roster is full of talent. If these guys can get their heads in the game, they could work wonders.
If they wind up with an elite pick like Davis, they could give the Denver Nuggets a run for their money as the best young up-and-coming team out West.
Brooklyn Nets–Odds: 7.5 Percent
6 of 6Unless this pick lands among the top-three selections, it will belong to the Portland Trail Blazers on account of the mid-season Gerald Wallace trade. If it does land in the top-three spots, the Brooklyn Nets will keep it.
Talk about a hit-or-miss situation.
If Brooklyn keeps this pick, its attempts to acquire Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic would benefit tremendously. Not only would the team have the assets to persuade Orlando to make the move, it would also be in a position to do so without completely gutting its roster of talent.
Needless to say, a lot is on the line for this team.
