Orlando Aquires Lue From Milwaukee For Bogans; Nelson to have surgery
Otis Smith announced today that the Orlando Magic have acquired guard Tyronn Lue from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for guard Keith Bogans.
The Magic have been searching for a point guard ever since All-Star Jameer Nelson was diagnosed with a torn labrum earlier this week.
“Tyronn is a veteran point guard who fits in well with our style of play,” said GM Otis Smith. “He shoots well from three-point range and adds needed depth at that position. We thank Keith for everything he gave to us and wish him all the best.”
In four years with the Magic, the fifth-year man out of Kentucky has averaged just over six points a game. Besides a handful of starts this year and last, Bogans has spent most of his time in Orlando coming off the bench.
Lue played in 30 games this season with the Bucks and has averaged just under five points per game. Lue spent some time with the Magic in the 03-04 season, averaging 10.5 points per game while playing 76 games, starting 69 of them.
So now that the point guard situation in Orlando seems to be over with, what can they do to get Jameer Nelson back on the court?
It looks like they won't.
The team said Wednesday that it would see if it is likely that Nelson can return in two to six weeks and then have the surgery in the offseason. Nelson has told reporters he will weigh his options and see what happens.
"If you rehab it and play, the likelihood that it comes back out again is pretty significant. So, then you start dealing with other issues from there," Smith said. "Our concern is always for the player's future. When you have as much invested in him as we have, you have to think about long term."
The organization, however, is hoping Nelson plans to have surgery so as not to risk injuring his shoulder again. Teammate Dwight Howard agrees with the team's decision.
"I think the likelihood of Jameer coming back is slim and none," Howard said.
