UFC 146 Results: Brief Fight Didn't Allow Jamie Varner Time to Prove He's Back
Jamie Varner made a return to UFC in a bout against formerly undefeated Edson Barboza. The former WEC lightweight champion last fought in the UFC in 2007, but ended this match too quickly to know what lies in store for the 27-year-old fighter.
Don't be surprised to see him wearing "The Terminator" on his trunks for his next fight. Varner made his thoughts clear, running to the camera after the first-round TKO and mouthing "I'm back."
It looked like the 5-1 favorite would spoil Varner's return early in the match. Barboza landed several low kicks and appeared to do some damage.
Varner caught one of his final kicks, though, as Barboza got too anxious and tried to land a foot to the head. Varner took him to the floor.
Varner landed a strong right when Barboza got up, followed by another.
After a right hook and a barrage against the cage, Barboza was on the ground again. A series of hammerfists made sure Barboza wouldn't get up again, and the fight was stopped.
Varner's ability to stun one of the sport's best prospects gives rise to questions on what is next in his tumultuous career.
He won his first four fights in the WEC, but had lost the last four bouts.
The win was too quick to really gauge if he still has the skill or conditioning to compete in the UFC, but he did answer with a win in a fight virtually no fan or analyst thought he could win.
At a minimum, Varner is set to land another UFC fight. Perhaps that one will be long enough to gauge his current skill level.
