Pacquiao vs. Bradley: Win over Pac-Man Would Launch Desert Storm to Superstardom
Everyone may want Manny Pacquiao to fight that other undefeated boxer (you know who I'm talking about), but let's not get ahead of ourselves—PacMan already has an undefeated fighter in Timothy Bradley to deal with.
An undefeated fighter who would ascend to the ranks of superstardom if he could add Pacquiao's name next to the other 28 victims he's accumulated in his unblemished career.
This fight may be Bradley's only chance to reach that sort of level, and he knows it. But it's also the perfect storm for him if he pulls the feat off.
He's 28, so he's still got several years of good boxing left in him. He would have a win over Pacquiao on his resume, which is equivalent to instant credibility. He would have a calling card with his undefeated record, which we all know is the central tenet in Floyd Mayweather's legacy.
And most importantly, he would represent change.
Mayweather and Pacquiao have dominated the scene for years. The heavyweight division has been completely taken over by the clinical and boring reign of the Klitschko brothers. The UFC and the MMA movement in general has seemed more fresh and compelling in recent years.
A change would be good for boxing. A monumental upset would shake things up, get people's attention, remind those fringe fans why anything can happen between the ropes.
Sure, a Pacquiao versus Mayweather superfight would be better, but the odds of that happening look slim to none at this point.
But having a new superstar in the sport? That would be pretty awesome.
Would Bradley be able to maintain his label as a superstar? It's hard to say. That would be decided by whether he was able to maintain a clean sheet, whom he decided to fight and how compelling each match was.
But at least in afterglow of the Pacquiao fight, he most certainly would be a star. If he knows that, he'll go for broke in this fight, which means we might have a very exciting bout on our hands.
And who knows, maybe a new day in boxing as well.
