Spurs Forfeit Game Against Nuggets
Gregg Popovich sat Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker on Tuesday's game against Denver. Ginobili was benched due to injuries that he consistenly has had throughout the season, but Duncan and Parker were another story.
The Spurs lost a game that they, more often than not, would have won with Parker and Duncan's ability to score. Especially against a Denver squad that easily give up a hundred points night in and night out.
Parker was apparently benched due to cockiness of making the All-star game. Tim Duncan is a question mark as to why he was riding the pine. These two were not in street clothes either so they could have easily helped the Spurs comeback and win.
Popovich must have had a flashback to his second grade AAU days because he wanted everyone on the team to get a little playing time tonight. This is acceptable coaching if you have won the division and locked a playoff spot up, but not right before the All-star break.
The Spurs are now only one game ahead of Denver in the West after this questionable move. I think Popovich was actually grabbing people out of the stands and playing them because I didn't know who a couple of these guys were.
Tonight's game showed that Roger Mason does not need to handle the ball on a regular basis throughout the game after dishing out eight turnovers. If Malik Hairston is the second leading scorer behind Mason, Popovich might need to take a closer look at the guys he is playing.
Teams in the Eastern conference should take this move as an insult as the Spurs have six more games on the their road trip. They will play the Knicks, Raptors and the Wizards, none of who are in playoff contention. Don't be surprised if San Antonio loses four of their next six games.
Once again Denver gained a game on the Spurs tonight and are only six games ahead of the eighth seeded Phoenix Suns. Houston, Denver, Los Angeles and Phoenix will all be looking to gain even more on the Spurs as they hit the floor tommorow night.
