Indy 500 2012: Marco Andretti and Other Drivers to Watch on Sunday

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

The Indy 500 is right around the corner and there are some names that you need to know heading into the big race on Sunday.

Of course, everybody in the field of 33 has a chance, but there are some names, new and old, that you should be looking out for this weekend.

Here are a few of those guys.

Marco Andretti

The third-generation driver has been successful at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the past, finishing second in 2006 and third in 2008 and 2010. He's set to start in the second row alongside Will Power and Helio Castroneves.

He was the only driver to pass 227 mph during practice and had this to say about what he thinks his chances to win this weekend are: "I showed up this month to win the race, and I still believe we could do it from 33rd."

Well there you have it, look out for Andretti this weekend. He's as confident as anybody in the field and should race to an impressive end on Sunday.

James Hinchcliffe

This will only be Hinchcliffe's second Indy 500 start and he kicked it off in great fashion, as he will start in the first row next to Ryan Briscoe after posting a pole time of 226.481. He lost out to Briscoe by the slimmest of margins and it's possible that if he blinked one less time, he would be the pole-sitter going into the race.

He was the replacement for the late Dan Wheldon on Andretti Autosport and is currently sitting in third place overall in the IndyCup standings.

Will Power

Power has dominated the field in basically ever single aspect of racing thus far into the season. After finishing seventh in the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, he's come back with a vengeance and won the last three races.

He'll be starting the Indy 500 in row two between Andretti and fellow teammate Castroneves. He and Castroneves will look to capitalize on their pole position and work together to keep themselves and teammate Ryan Briscoe out in front.

Since debuting in 2008, he's become a force on the circuit, finishing second in the overall standings the last two years. Look for the guy with the best name in the field to be in prime position to grab the checkered flag in the closing laps of the race on Sunday.

Dario Franchitti

As a four-time IndyCar series, Franchitti is entering the Indy 500 trying to prove that he is not the least of the Chip Ganassi cars in this race. He's starting in 16th place, his worst pole at the race since he started 17th in 2006.

He finished 12th at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year and will be looking to turn some heads and make a roaring comeback from his precarious starting spot.

Speaking of turning heads, maybe he can rely on his wife, Ashley Judd, to distract the other drivers and move up a few spots.
