Formula 1: Lets Make the Winter Season More Exciting!
It's the beginning of February and sod all is currently happening in Formula 1. Honda hasn't decided who is going to buy them, nobody is testing at the moment, and there are still 50-plus days until the first race of the season.
And I'm bored.
As you can see from the picture, the most exciting thing to happen in the past two months is when Lewis Hamilton didn't race Chris Hoy at the race of champions because Britain's best cyclist wasn't sure if he could stay upright. As you can also see from this picture, Lewis couldn't care less about Hoy's saddle.
Therefore, I think that the time period of November to March should be made more interesting for us fans. After all, reading about Adrian Sutil completing 76 laps in a Force India without it exploding is as much as we're getting at the minute.
Obviously they could shove some races in this time frame, but I'm sure the drivers do like this time off, and the teams do need it to get their car ready for the new season, especially with all of the new regulations that are being brought in. So that's out.
So how about we force them to do other things? For a start, let's televise one of these poker tournaments that Bernie Ecclestone and Robert Kubica seem to enjoy so much. The top prize could be a free superlicense or something.
Kimi Raikkonen seems to enjoy the odd spot of rallying, and I'm sure the WRC wouldn't mind him taking part in one of the early races. Nobody cares about whatever rally he's doing in Scanditarctica—shove him in the real thing and let us watch it on Dave!
Here's a more serious suggestion—how about some Formula 1 shows during this time? I know we had that season review thing on ITV around the beginning of January, but what would be wrong with a weekly or fortnightly half-hour show? Dave could do it with the WRC, and I think the BBC should be able to do the same, even if they shove it one of their digital channels.
I know Mark Webber occasionally pops on to "A Question of Sport", so thumbs up to him; he has the right idea. But one driver going on one quiz show isn't going to fill up the void of winter.
Even if they just broadcast some bits of testing on the internet, at least give us something to do during these four months. I'm sure there are many people out there who would greatly enjoy something Formula 1-related in the offseason, and anything would be greatly appreciated by myself at least.
