10 Things That Would Make the College Football Offseason More Entertaining

Carl StineMay 22, 2012

This list will inspire you.

It runs down a number of ideas to make the college football offseason more interesting.

Right now, you are probably going through some sort of football withdrawal, which can lead to watching baseball games, which can lead to long mid-day naps, which can lead to missed events with your significant other.

Don't miss events with your significant other. Get rid of boring summer activities.

Most of the entertainment options on this list are thing that would have to be televised, but a few of them can be done on your own, although Bleacher Report does not in any way condone the use of NCAA "student-athletes" for slave labor.

10. Replay Every BCS Game, Ever

1 of 10

If only one of the networks would pick this up.

Right about now, you are experiencing severe withdrawals.

There is no football, the NBA playoffs (if you watch them) are winding down, and the only major sport left to watch is baseball. (Golf does not qualify.)

What better way to help satisfy the craving for some pigskin action than by re-watching BCS games?

If you only watched the BCS title games, you would see such classics as Miami vs. Ohio State in 2003, Texas vs. USC (best game ever) in '06 and last season's instant classic (yawn).

The outcomes would not change no matter how many times you watched them, but it's a great way to make the hot summer days move by a little faster.

9. An Extended Season

2 of 10

Sure, there are concerns about athletes struggling academically.

At least, that's what opponents of extending the season like to suggest.

However, we all know that basketball players miss far more time in class than the football players.

Even just two more regular season games would mean two more weeks in which we do not long for football to return.

8. Skills Competitions, Underclassmen Only

3 of 10

Usually, following the football season, skills competitions of varying sorts can be found, mostly featuring upperclassmen and those leaving their respective programs.

With some sort of agreement from the NCAA and a television network, we could see Washington quarterback Keith Price and USC quarterback Matt Barkley go head-to-head in some sort of skills competition.

And while we are at it, let's throw the usual upperclassmen out and keep this to just those players returning to their programs for another year.

Hey, it's an idea.

7. Super Conference Drafts

4 of 10

Okay, here's the idea.

Following the SEC and Big 12 agreement to play their own bowl game involving the champions of their respective conferences, all the rumors are focused on the move to "super conferences."

When it happens, let's get creative.

The conference with the worst overall record in non-conference play gets to trade its worst team for one from the conference with the best record.

That goes on down the line in a sort of draft.

So, after Indiana's 14th consecutive losing season, the Big Ten could send them to say, the Big 12 and take Texas.

This could be a televised event—with plenty of other bells and whistles that could be involved—but it's something that could take up a significant chunk of time during the offseason.

6. "Hard Knocks," College Style

5 of 10

HBO's Hard Knocks was pretty popular last season, particularly considering that Rex Ryan was a part of it.

Why not take that same type of show and move it to the college realm?

Sure, the NCAA would have to give their okay—and there are numerous other hoops to jump through—but for at least the months of spring and fall practice, you could pass some time watching 300-pound offensive linemen practice.

5. Quiz Shows Starring Awards Finalists

6 of 10

"This question is for Justin Blackmon."

"What size is your quarterback's shoe?"

Imagine the possibilities.

Featuring only award finalists, this type of show, with such categories as football, football history and football quotes, could be very entertaining, if done well.

4. Recruiting Auctions

7 of 10

Forget the usual recruiting tactics that teams employ.

Let's have a two-week "auction," if you will, with each team earning credits they can spend by having players graduate.

The participants would be high school recruits that are entering college within three years, and teams would bid for the right to recruit them, with the winner getting first crack, and then on down the line.

It would take tons of work to get this off the ground, and there are probably a zillion different tweaks that could be made, but it's a start.

3. Scrapbook Old Pictures of Current Coaches

8 of 10

That's got to be the best picture of Urban Meyer available.

I love the 'stache.

And we are not talking about just doing this scrapbooking thing on a whim. We're talking full-blown scissors, glue and markers quality time.

Or you could take the money you would spend doing this and start stockpiling provisions for football season.

2. Coaches' Sumo Suit Wrestling

9 of 10

I can see it now.

Bret Bielema and Urban Meyer get in the ring to settle a dispute over recruiting tactics. The loser must shut up, and the winner gets the recruit.

Or how about Jimbo Fisher and Frank Beamer?

Beamer is getting a little aged, but I think my money would be on him.

1. Rotten Program Tracking

10 of 10

You can do this now, on your own, but a program somewhere on your television would be the optimal way to pass the time.

It seems as if every summer we hear about arrests, indiscretions and resignations on the part of players and/or coaches.

Why not turn this into a competition, with the winner losing five scholarships?

It could get really interesting in places such as Florida, where arrests have been commonplace in the past. (Ohio State, this is what you have to look forward to.)
