Bundesliga Matchday 18: Bayern Prove That Overconfidence is the Key to Failure

Samrin HasibFeb 3, 2009

One team that annoys me more than Werder at times is the side I support, Bayern Munich. After going 10 matches unbeaten, they stretched the run to 11 by hammering, rather bulldozing Stuttgart 5-1. Out of all the teams, they lost their first game of the second half to their “bogey team”, Hamburger SV.

Shocking Results (not really in Werder’s case)

Hamburger SV 1:0 Bayern Munchen

Hamburg should be really thankful to Bayern for their transfer policy. Ex Bayern stars Jansen, Trochowski and Guerrero are all Hamburg stars now. AND..Guess what? Trochowski ran the Hamburg midfield as Bayern were defeated by Hamburg 1-0, a sole Mladen Petric header the difference. Hamburg thus has taken four out of a possible six points from Bayern this season.

Werder Bremen 1:2 Arminia Bielefeld.

Previously I mentioned in an article that Werder Bremen’s failure in the Champions League is due to inconsistency. God only knows how Thomas Schaaf will get some sense into his players’ heads, in terms of being disciplined and consistent. Diego and Pizarro probably heard in the news that their team lost in their absence.

Werder lost to relegation battling Bielefeld. Almeida’s freekick was not enough to earn Bremen a point due to King Artur’s strike. Let’s look at the bright side, Arminia fans will now have more faith in King Artur Wichniarek.

Hannover 1:0 Schalke

Sergio Pinto scored the lone goal of the match. I wonder how Fred Rutten is feeling now. Credit goes to Hannover though. They were 13th prior to the break. A certain Huszti freekick had given them a 1-0 victory over the Bavarians and now they have also taken all three points against the Konigsblauen.

Table-topping results

Hoffenheim 2:0 Energie Cottbus

A goal from debutant Boubacar Sanogo and another one from Demba Ba sent Hoffenheim back to the top. The result showed that even in Ibisevic’s absence, Hoffenheim can get a victory.

Hertha Berlin 2:1 Eintracht Frankfurt

A transformed Hertha coached by Lucien Favre proved that they have what it takes to challenge for the title. Once again, Marko Pantelic was the man who led Hertha to victory. Cicero did miss a penalty, but thankfully for Berlin, they weren’t made to pay for the miss.

VfB Stuttgart 2:0 Borussia Moenchengladbach

Ciprian Marica and Mario Gomez scored two goals to lead VfB to a victory. The victory means that Stuttgart are yet to be defeated in the league under license-less coach Markus Babbel. Stuttgart are now seventh in the standings and battling for a place in Europe. I don’t know about anyone else but I really respect and admire Babbel for the belief he has brought into Stuttgart.

Notable Result:

FC Koeln 1:1 VfL Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg continued their train ride for this season after being held by Koeln. Grafite earned Wolfsburg their point while Koeln’s goal was scored by Radu. Looks like Lukas Podolski’s home-coming will be in the first, not second division!

Elsewhere, Bochum escaped the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Karlsruher SC.

THE MATCH:

Borussia Dortmund 1:1 Bayer Leverkusen

Jurgen Klopp said he was disappointed with the fact that his side earned only a point. After all, it was a home game! A moment of silence was observed for the Dortmund fan who died after falling from the stands.

The ever-reliable Alex Frei opened the scoring for Dortmund. However when you have Patrick Helmes playing for the opposition, you are never sure of the three points. Helmes popped in a goal during the second half, stealing a point from Signal- Iduna Park.

The top five this week are:

  1. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim- 38
  2. Hertha Berlin -36
  3. Hamburg -36
  4. Bayern- 35
  5. Bayer – 33

Before I end, I would like to add a few more entertaining news coming in from the DFB Pokal Quarter Finals draw. The draw is as follows:

Bayer Leverkusenvs Bayern Munich

VfL Wolfsburg vs Werder Bremen

Hamburger SV vs SV Wehen Wiesbaden

Mainzvs Schalke

Well, that’s about it for this week. Hope you enjoyed the article!
