College Football Reportedly May Move to 4 Superconferences

Austin GreenJun 7, 2018

College football is already in the midst of some seismic changes, and it looks like more are on the horizon.

With the recent announcement that the Big 12 and SEC signed a five-year deal to have their champions play in a bowl game (starting in 2014), Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News reports that the sport could soon undergo more major realignment.

"I really can't believe I'm saying this," one Big 12 school source said. "We might be moving to four superconferences -- and the Big 12 would be one of those."

If Carlton's source is correct, college football as we know it would be obliterated.

With the recent plan to switch to a four-team playoff, we knew there would be drastic effects across the country. This agreement between the SEC and Big 12 is, perhaps, the latest domino to fall in the superconference scheme.

Along with the Big Ten and Pac-12's annual Rose Bowl contest, this new bowl game could further separate the top four conferences from the ACC (2-13 as a conference in BCS bowl games) and the lowly Big East, who simply can't keep up with the powerhouses.

If further realignment does occur, the ACC and Big East will be dealt devastating blows. There are already plenty of rumors about Florida State leaving the ACC and those should only heat up in the coming months.

Don't be surprised if names like Miami (FL) and Notre Dame get thrown into the mix as well.

At this point, all the talk about the four superconferences is purely speculation. However, with this new bowl game between the Big 12 and SEC, drastic realignment is looking more likely than ever.
