I'll Have Another Preakness: Derby Winner Will Take 2nd Leg of Triple Crown
I'll Have Another has an opportunity to continue down the road to history if he can win at Pimlico in the 137th Preakness Stakes, and there's a great chance that will happen.
In the Kentucky Derby, I'll Have Another had some stiff competition, namely Bodemeister who led most of the race until I'll Have Another's late surge took the race.
The No. 9 position won't be as scary a proposition this time around, even though I'll Have Another has already proven he can win from even the worst poles. Being on the outside, I'll Have Another will be in great position to stay out of trouble and prepare itself for the stretch run.
With a shorter track, Bodemeister is certainly favored after showing stunning speed and endurance at Churchill Downs. That being said, I'll Have Another's road to the Triple Crown will certainly go through Bodemeister.
The incredible amount of respect for Bodemeister's speed might be underestimating I'll Have Another's best qualities.
But one thing nobody can underestimate is the incredible closing speed of I'll Have Another. As long as he's within striking distance down the stretch, I'll Have Another can quickly make up any deficit he incurs.
Two races in two weeks could prove to be too much for Bodemeister and in turn, could diminish his speed and stamina. If that's the case, we could be looking at a repeat scenario for the Preakness.
Tired or not, I'll Have Another doesn't need to expend a heck of a lot in this race to win.
Look for Bodemeister's trainer, Mike Smith, to hold his horse back after learning from his mistakes in the Derby. That will enable I'll Have Another to run more of his race and not get caught up in a foot race on the shorter track.
In the end, I'll Have Another's closing speed will once again be too much for Bodemeister and these two will finish nose-to-nose with I'll Have Another coming out on top to take the Preakness.
