Can Georges St. Pierre Now Be Declared MMA's Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter?
For many MMA fans, Georges St-Pierre was considered the third best fighter pound for pound before UFC 94 while BJ Penn was considered the fourth best pound for pound fighter. St. Pierre and Penn fought at UFC 94 and Georges made BJ Penn look average. GSP dominated a very talented fighter and showed everybody what he's all about.
Joe Rogan actually said that GSP had elevated himself as THE best pound for pound fighter in MMA today with his dominant performance over Penn. St. Pierre executed a great gameplan and defeated BJ. It's not as if nobody was expecting GSP to win the fight, St-Pierre was bigger, stronger and had better cardio.
The best BJ Penn didn't show up at UFC 94, in my opinion. BJ wasn't aggressive, he looked so worried not making a mistake that he didn't commit to his hands, afraid of getting taken down. As we all know, that didn't stop GSP from taking Penn down and when he was down, Penn didn't defend the punches too well and didn't even seem to want to get back up.
I'm not taking anything away from St. Pierre, but he didn't fight the best BJ Penn, in my opinion. GSP is great, but I don't think he elevated himself to the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. As far as the pound-for-pound rankings are concerned, I don't think it changes much.
There is no doubt that St. Pierre is a future Hall of Famer and the best welterweight fighter in the world, but I feel three fighters could be considered better pound-for-pound fighters than GSP:
Lyoto Machida
Machida is probably the best Light-Heavyweight fighter in MMA and should hold the belt in a short period of time. Machida is 14-0 and nobody has been able to figure him out yet. I consider Machida to be one of the best pound for pound fighters in MMA today and with time, more people will too.
He's elusive, he has great stand-up and had great BJJ skills, Lyoto Machida may surpass GSP in the pound for pound rankings if things continue on like this for "The Dragon."
It's been awhile now that fans have been asking for Silva vs GSP, will it ever happen? we don't know, and until we find out, it's hard to put GSP over Anderson Silva. Silva has dominated everybody in the UFC and hasn't lost in the octagon. Georges is dominant, but his losses to Matt Hugues and Matt Serra are hard to forget.
Silva has better kickboxing skills and probably better BJJ skills, I think Anderson Silva is still a little too much for GSP and I would still consider him better pound for pound. Hopefully we will get to see this fight so I can prove my point.
Until this guy retires from MMA, it will be very hard to put anybody ahead of him in the pound for pound rankings. Anderson Silva is the closest in my opinion to get to Fedor but then again many people believe many different things.
Fedor proves time and time again that he is the best in the world. He has dominated everybody he has fought and never really loss, unless you call a referee stoppage due to a cut a "real" loss. Georges is very good, but to consider him a better pound for pound fighter then Fedor would be kind of crazy.
So there is no doubt that Georges St-Pierre is one of the best, but to say he is THE best is a little premature. He may one day get that title, but for now, he's still inferior to Silva and Emelianenko in my opinion and should watch out for Lyoto Machida.
GSP's next fight will probably be against Thiago Alves who has the skills to beat St-Pierre and a loss here would probably make St-Pierre drop down the rankings a little, just enough to give Lyoto the third spot.
