Preakness 2012 Horses: Entries with Best Odds to Win in This Field
The 2012 Preakness Stakes will be finally be run Saturday, May 19 at the Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore.
I'll Have Another stole the show with an electric race at the Kentucky Derby, but there are plenty of horses in the running to ensure he does not complete the second leg of the Triple Crown.
Below, we break down the horses with the best odds to win the Preakness Saturday.
All odds are taken from AllHorseRacing.com.
Bodemeister (7/5)
A favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, Bodemeister raced out to an early lead at Churchill Downs but couldn't maintain his lightning-fast fractions down the stretch. I'll Have Another passed Bodemeister over the last 200 yards to win the Derby and push Bob Baffert's three-year-old colt into second.
At the Preakness, Bodemeister will start as the narrow favorite over I'll Have Another. Baffert's track record at Pimlico (five-time winner at the Preakness) speaks volumes, and Bodemeister's performance at the Derby may translate better to the shorter track in Maryland.
I'll Have Another (5/2)
At 15/1 odds and coming from the No. 19 post, I'll Have Another made a shocking run to pass Bodemeister late and claim the Kentucky Derby's nearly $1.5 million prize. Trainer Doug O'Neill's horse won the Derby by one-and-a-half lengths.
I'll Have Another looks like a favorite to take the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, especially considering the colt has won three straight races dating back to February. Don't rule out another late surge from I'll Have Another to win the second leg.
Creative Cause (6/1)
Creative Cause stayed in the hunt at the Kentucky Derby for most of the race, but there simply wasn't enough stamina for a late push. The three-year-old colt finished a distant fifth.
While it's not unheard of for a horse to rebound from a fifth place finish at the Derby in Maryland, Creative Cause has an uphill battle to compete for the top spot at the Preakness. For the odds, however, Mike Harrington probably isn't a terrible bet.
Went the Day Well (6/1)
A poor start at the Derby cost Went the Day Well a chance at claiming a win that many thought he could produce at Churchill Downs. While lagging back near the back to begin the race, Went the Day Well surged into fourth place with a final push. He finished just two-and-a-half lengths back from I'll Have Another, the eventual winner.
If Went the Day Well can get off to a stronger start, there's a horse capable of winning at the Preakness.
Teeth of the Dog/Daddy Nose Best (15/1)
Both Teeth of the Dog and Daddy Nose Best represent long shots, but there's reason to believe that one of the two could make a run toward the top in Baltimore.
Daddy Nose Best has four career wins and seven career top-three finishes, and Teeth of the Dog has yet to finish one of his four career races below third place. One of the top finishers Saturday could come from either horse.
