Rarer Than a Shooting Star: Who's the Next QD Man?
This past weekend, I found myself browsing through NBA records and such when I happened upon the feat that in basketball I find most interesting. Even more than 100 points in a game or two MYP's in a row. The Quadruple Double.
One of the rarest feats in the NBA, only four players have ever recorded a Quadruple-Double in a game. Though there were several near misses and denials of this feat, and the NBA only began counting Blocks and Steals in 1973 leaving some greats like Wilt and Jerry out. Here is a list of the four.
- Nate Thurmond, Oct. 18, 1974, Chicago vs. Atlanta; 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists, 12 blocks. (OT)
- Alvin Robertson, Feb. 18, 1986, San Antonio vs. Phoenix; 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 steals.
- Hakeem Olajuwon, Mar. 29, 1990, Houston vs. Milwaukee; 18 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, 11 blocks.
- David Robinson, Feb. 17, 1994, San Antonio vs. Detroit; 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 10 blocks.
Take notice that of these four feats only one required an Overtime to accomplish back in the '70s.
So my question is, who in our current NBA would be the next man to enter this elite club? I'll list my top three choices.
1. Chris Paul
Not once but twice already this year he has come close to achieving this feat. He's definitely carrying his team at a MVP stature and his stats reflect it.
For a guy who leads the league in Triple-Double, I would say he's my best bet, already a dangerous thief, assist man, and scorer all it would take is one night of all that and some rebounding (maybe with Chandler or West out for the game?) for him to take it to another level.
If Chris Paul continues playing like a superstar and if his team continues needing him to do this much work (whether that's good or bad) I can see him recording more than one QD in his career.
2. Dwight Howard
Another stallion pulling his team to victory, Dwight Howard is the big man for the job. Leading the league in Double-Doubles, Dwight dominates in the paint, period. He also leads the league in Blocked Shots (and probably in Goal-tending).
His current team situation does nothing but help him, always getting doubled in the post and a team full of shooters, sounds like easy assists to me.
I say line the Magic up against a team that likes to score loads in the paint and Dwight can pull out a QD especially since many people agree that his skills aren't even fully developed. Scary huh?
3. LeBron James
This I rare, King James being the last choice but it's true. James is a legit Triple-Double threat, maybe not as much as Paul, but he gets it done. Rebounds come easy with that body and strength, he loves to get his team involved and assist, he's even stepped up his defense with Blocks and steals, and when it comes to points, have we ever had a doubt since 2003?
I say get LeBron on a good night, throw him a OT or two and I can see him pulling out 10 steals and the other stats will follow. The only problem here is that I think the days for this are over for LeBron, looks like his team is finally set and we don't see his scoring fits like we used to.
Mo Williams and Big Z on the court might be the only thing holding LeBron back. O'well, that would be just one of the few exclusive clubs he doesn't get into.
So my question to everyone else is Do you agree? If not who are your choices? In this era where the League is arguably at the peak of it's athleticism what do you think?
