College Football's 50 Most Embarrassing Moments
College football has seen it all. We have seen huge passing plays, dazzling run plays, hits that have left you speechless and big plays on special teams that help you understand why they are called that.
On the other hand, college football has seen its fair share of embarrassing moments that have brought down the sport in one way or another. Fans have witnessed officiating blunders, players and coaches losing control, off-the-field controversy and much more.
Here is a look at the 50 embarrassing moments that most college fans just want to forget about.
Bell Ringer
1 of 50You have to feel bad for this guy. He is doing his best to sound the bell for Texas Tech, but the angle and the overall feel of the action leave you feeling really uncomfortable.
For Red Raider fans, this is not a bright spot.
Extra Point Called Good
2 of 50In a game between Toledo and Syracuse, the men in stripes were not at their best.
Late in the game, Syracuse scored to go up by two, and the extra point appeared to make it three. Despite looking at replay, the refs upheld the call, which was clearly a miss, and it ended up costing Toledo, as its late-game field goal only tied the game instead of putting the Rockets ahead.
Creation of the BCS
3 of 50During the 1998 season, one of the worst things to happen to college football was put into place—the BCS.
The BCS has been an embarrassment for college football because it leaves it as the only major sport without a playoff. While they are working on changing the system, the BCS has continued to hold back the sports for more than a decade now.
Jake Locker Penalty
4 of 50One of the craziest things about college football is the game is filled with so many emotions, and yet the expectation of the players is to always be in control.
Jake Locker scored a last-second touchdown and threw the ball in the air. The play was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and cost the Huskies the game.
Running into the Kicker?
5 of 50In 2008, the Bulldogs and Warriors went at it and witnessed one of the most phantom calls we have seen in awhile.
The Bulldogs lined up for a game-winning kick, and despite the miss, Fresno State was given a second chance after its kicker drew a penalty against Hawaii.
Huston Gone Wild
6 of 50What Kellen Huston does here is disgusting and embarrassing. When leaving the field, Huston levels a Missouri fan and leaves people speechless.
This is an action you have to see to believe.
Blount Punches Player
7 of 50After the Oregon and Boise State game was over in 2009, many fans were waiting for SportsCenter to come on, and instead they were treated to Thursday Night boxing.
In the postgame, Boise State's Byron Hout began to taunt Oregon's LeGarrette Blount. Blount didn't wait long to deliver this right cross to Hout's chin.
Blount Goes After a Fan
8 of 50To make the LeGarrette Blount story worse, he wasn't done with just one punch.
When leaving the field, Boise State fans began to taunt and threaten Blount, to which he responded by going after them. Luckily, he didn't get into the stands, but it was still a black eye for college football.
Todd Graham Job Hopping
9 of 50Todd Graham has certainly left his mark on college football.
Since 2006, Graham has been the head coach at Rice, Tulsa, Pittsburgh and now Arizona State. The amount of bouncing around has been ridiculous, and it is hard to understand how a recruit could take him seriously at this point.
So Close for Boise State
10 of 50After continuing to lobby to get into the national title game, Boise State had another perfect season going.
When Nevada tied the game late, the Broncos offense connected on a bomb that gave them a relative chip-shot field goal for the win. Broncos kicker Kyle Brotzman came in and not only missed that field goal but also the one that would cost them the game in overtime.
Craig James' Son Gets Locked in a Practice Closet
11 of 50Regardless of where the truth may lie, the story about Craig James' son being locked in a practice closet is not a good one.
The story led to Mike Leach being suspended and eventually fired, and then the lawsuits began.
Mike Gundy Goes off
12 of 50Despite how well Mike Gundy has done at Oklahoma State, he will always be remembered for the postgame rant that he delivered to reporters.
Most college fans will recognize the tag-line of, "I'm a man, I'm 40," every time they hear it.
John L. Smith Goes off the Deep End
13 of 50Congrats on your new head coach, Arkansas.
When it comes down to postgame embarrassment, not much is worse than this two-second implosion by John L. Smith.
Brian Kelly Explodes on the Sideline
14 of 50While some coaches go off in the postgame, Brian Kelly doesn't hold back and fires off on the sideline.
Watch Kelly completely embarrass Notre Dame with his sideline temper. His temper had actually received so much attention that some alumni wanted him fired over it.
Bush Is Stripped of the Heisman
15 of 50When the NCAA finally concluded the investigation into the benefits that Bush and others received while at USC, the punishment was severe and left a stain on the school.
The penalties included a postseason ban, reduction of scholarships, vacated wins and Reggie Bush losing his Heisman Trophy.
Roboduck
16 of 50This is a moment in Oregon football history that makes fans cringe in the corner.
During halftime of a game against Stanford, the Ducks marketing people thought that the idea of Roboduck would be a huge hit. The birth of Roboduck also ended up being the death, as it was a short-lived idea that received huge backlash from the fans.
Losing Ground Fast
17 of 50I'm not sure who this is more embarrassing for, but the play was pretty bad.
After scooping up a Penn State fumble, Alabama started to head the other way, but before getting down or in the end zone, the Tide coughed it up, and the Nittany Lions recovered.
At the end of the play, the result was a loss of 87 yards of field position for Penn State and the loss of a potential score for Alabama.
Brad Wing Makes Himself Known
18 of 50Coming into last year, the NCAA had redone celebration rules and made it known that players could be flagged for a spot foul for celebrating before entering the end zone.
In a game against Florida, Brad Wing flawlessly executed a fake punt, but got hit for the unsportsmanlike call that cost him a touchdown.
Michigan's Home Loss to Appalachian State
19 of 50Not only was this play embarrassing for Michigan fans but the entire game was, too.
Despite how poorly Michigan played, it still had a shot to make sure FCS opponent Appalachian State did not upset the Wolverines, but this blocked field goal secured their fate.
Mark Mangino Exiting Kansas
20 of 50Mark Mangino was doing an outstanding job at Kansas. In 2007, he led the Jayhawks to a 12-1 record and seemed to have the program on the right track.
But as his record faltered a bit, the school was set to launch an internal investigation into the way Mangino was treating the team when he resigned as head coach.
De'Anthony Thomas Turns Around Washington State Player
21 of 50De'Anthony Thomas proved how valuable he can be last year, and the scary part is he was only a freshman.
In one of his first games, Thomas took a pass down the sideline and turned this poor Washington State defender like a top. Fast forward to 4:33 to see the play.
Florida State Wide Right 1
22 of 50This is a play that has become way too familiar to Florida State fans.
In 1991, the Seminoles had a chance to beat Miami with under a minute to go, but the play known as "Wide Right" was born.
And it was not the last time Seminole fans would have to endure the pain.
Florida State Wide Right 2
23 of 50Just one year later, the nightmare returned.
With another chance to beat Miami, the Seminoles again sailed one wide right and lost to the Hurricanes for the second straight season. Fast forward to the :40 mark to see this one.
Florida State Wide 3-5
24 of 50Boy, the nightmare just would not stop for the Seminoles.
Start the video at the :50 mark to watch the Seminoles cost themselves three more games with field goals ending up wide.
At this point, this became downright embarrassing for the players and fans.
Miami's Scandal
25 of 50While the full extent of what has gone on at Miami is unknown, what is known is that Nevin Shapiro was an active booster for the Hurricanes.
Shapiro has come out and said he arranged for drugs, alcohol, prostitutes and more to be provided to players, and he has been doing so for quite a while.
Only time will tell how bad this gets for the Hurricanes.
Texas A&M's 2011 Season
26 of 50The 2011 season was a rough one for the Aggies. While they still made it to a bowl game, the team regularly collapsed with second-half leads and became a national punchline.
While it was even worse for fans of the school, seeing the Aggies blow another lead almost became embarrassing for everyone.
Miami Fight 1
27 of 50Miami is no stranger to fights in games, and this is the first one on the list.
In a game against San Diego State, watch as the Hurricanes give college football a black eye when this pick-six turns ugly.
Miami Fight 2
28 of 50And here is the other black eye.
Against Florida International, these two teams got into a fight that was one of the ugliest the sport has ever seen.
Egg Bowl Brawl
29 of 50If you don't watch hockey for the fighting, don't worry—there's plenty on this list for college football.
During the Egg Bowl, Mississippi State and Ole Miss showed the passion of this rivalry as they got after each other.
Fan on the Field and Fighting
30 of 50In a crazy moment between UCLA and Arizona, a fan ran onto the field, and during the delay, the two teams decided they were going to get after each other and fight.
Just a crazy and embarrassing moment all at once.
Oregon Gets an Onside Kick
31 of 50The officials are back and in a play that Sooner fans will never forgive.
After a late comeback left the Ducks needing an onside kick, it not only appeared that Oregon touched the kick early but that the Sooners had recovered it.
After the scrum and after replay, the refs gave the Ducks the ball and helped them on the road to victory.
Penn State Catches a Break
32 of 50In a big game between Nebraska and Penn State, the Nittany Lions used a huge missed call to earn a victory. With time running out, this sideline pass was ruled a catch, but watch again as it appears he is clearly out of bounds.
Tattoo-Gate
33 of 50At Ohio State, Jim Tressel had things rolling, as the Buckeyes were the kings of the Big Ten.
During the 2010 season, though, it was found that players—including Terrell Pryor—had been selling memorabilia in exchange for tattoos.
Later on, it was found out that Tressel had knowledge of this and not only did he not do anything but he lied about it until all the evidence came out. He resigned soon after.
Giving Him the Business
34 of 50Speaking of the refs again, this is simply a penalty you must hear to believe.
Listen to what the call is here on the penalty. This had to have been embarrassing to call out.
Another Interesting Call
35 of 50You have to feel bad for referees when they are put in this position.
In this game between Baylor and TCU, take a listen to the penalty call that this ref had to announce.
Onside Kick Going the Other Way
36 of 50In a last-ditch effort to get a shot at tying the game, Texas Tech tried an onside kick that completely backfired.
Watch as Iowa State is able to put this game away.
Time to Move
37 of 50This is possibly one of the strangest plays in college football history and now an extremely embarrassing one.
During this game between Florida and Florida State, watch as the center never moves after snapping the ball.
Classless Move by USC
38 of 50Up two scores, with the ball and under a minute to go against UCLA, UCLA called a timeout. In response, USC dialed up a deep throw and unloaded a 50-yard bomb for a score.
The play infuriated the Bruins sideline and almost sparked a fight. While the timeout was not needed, it did not give the Trojans a green light on an even worse move.
A truly classless move by former coach Pete Carroll.
Masoli out at Oregon
39 of 50After taking the Ducks to the Rose Bowl after their 2009 season, Duck fans were excited to have Jeremiah Masoli back at quarterback for the next season.
What nobody saw coming was Masoli going on a crime spree that included theft from a frat house, and then being busted for possession of marijuana and driving infractions.
The string of events eventually led to Masoli being kicked off the team.
Ty Willingham's Firing
40 of 50What was embarrassing about the firing of Ty Willingham was the performance that Charlie Weis gave as his replacement.
When Weis took over, he virtually mirrored Willingham's success and was eventually fired.
SMU's Death Penalty
41 of 50When the final judgement was put down on the SMU Mustangs, they had received the death penalty.
During the 1970s and 1980s, players at SMU received money and other benefits for playing, and the practice eventually led to the program spinning out of control.
Woody Loses It
42 of 50Despite all of the good that Woody Hayes did while at Ohio State, it all got erased with one play against Clemson.
Watch as Hayes loses it against the Tigers and steps over the line during the Gator Bowl.
Split Title in 1997
43 of 50In 1997, both Michigan and Nebraska had amazing seasons, but it had become clear that Michigan was the dominant team.
Since college football lacked a playoff or title game, both teams were awarded half of the title that year, but many believe Nebraska got to share in it since it was Tom Osborne's last season.
5th Down
44 of 50In a game between Colorado and Missouri, the two teams went back and forth until Colorado put a final drive together.
After getting deep into Missouri territory, Colorado was mistakenly given five downs, and they capitalized by scoring on that final play to beat the Tigers.
Grellow Helmets
45 of 50When the Ducks went to take on BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl, they were going to show off their new helmets.
While the concept of the helmet was cool—a different shade depending on the angle—the look was awful and known as the color "grellow."
Harbaugh Gives Carroll a Play out of His Own Book
46 of 50In 2009, the USC Trojans were in obvious decline, and Stanford took advantage.
Up big late, Jim Harbaugh continued to send a message, as the Cardinal scored, and then the head coach elected to go for two.
This move led to a midfield discussion that appeared uncomfortable.
Badgers Run It Up
47 of 50Up 69-13 late in the fourth, most coaches just want to get the game over with and make sure that nobody gets hurt in the process.
Not so much for Bret Bielema.
Instead, Bielema dialed up a deep ball that went for a score. Not the classiest of moves by the Badgers' head man.
Alabama Playing for the 2012 National Title
48 of 50Last year, Alabama and LSU met up during the regular season and played an outstanding game that eventually saw the Tide lose at home.
Despite this head-to-head game, the Tide were allowed to play for the national title against LSU. The only good that may come from this is that it has opened people's eyes to the need for a playoff.
The Jerry Sandusky Case
49 of 50The whole case dealing with Jerry Sandusky has been one of the worst and most embarrassing moments for college football, especially for Penn State.
Accusations that Sandusky sexually abused young boys on Penn State's campus is a stain that may never go away.
Joe Paterno Fired
50 of 50On the heels of the Jerry Sandusky case, the Penn State Board of Trustees made the choice to immediately fire Joe Paterno.
The way this case was handled was embarrassing for the school, and Penn State is still dealing with the backlash from it.
