Scoring Leaders Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby Tackle Most-Scored-Upon Leafs

Martin AveryJan 31, 2009

Toronto Maple Leafs honour Doug Gilmour tonight, raising his jersey to the rafters. Maybe they should ask him to do them the honour of helping them out in the game as the NHL's top two scorers are in town and only the Atlanta Thrashers have had more goals scored against them this season.

Toronto's top defenceman will be out with an injury tonight when the league's top two scorers (Evgeni Malkin, 73 points, and Sidney Crosby, 66) play against the Leafs.

These teams have split two meetings this season - both at Pittsburgh. Crosby had a goal and three assists in the Penguins' 4-1 win on Oct. 18 .

Toronto ended a four-game losing streak Thursday night by notching a decisive victory in Colorado. Dominic Moore scored two goals and added an assist, as the Maple Leafs pulled away to top the Avalanche, 7-4, at Pepsi Center.

Toronto won for the first time in Colorado since March 29, 1997, having lost the last three match-ups there.

The Pittsburgh captain has two goals and four assists in two contests since the break, and seven goals and 16 assists in 14 games against the Maple Leafs.

Malkin now has 20 goals to go along with 53 assists on the season which continues to lead the NHL. Over his last 10 games, Malkin has scored four times while adding 11 assists.

Malkin led the Pittsburgh attack in Thursday's 6-3 doubling of Atlanta, posting two goals and two assists to help the Penguins improve their record to 17-10-4.

He registered his first NHL hat trick against Toronto on Jan. 3 and has 18 assists in nine career match-ups versus the Leafs.

Evgeni Malkin won the shooting accuracy event of the NHL's SuperSkills competition.

Malkin hit four targets in the minimum four shots in the first round tying Ottawa's Dany Heatley. Then the Pens' star hit three of four in the tiebreaker to defeat Heatley, who could only muster two hits.

Evgeni Malkin saved one of the best of the weekend for the NHL All-Star Game last night. In the second period, as he skated in front of the Western Conference net, Malkin pushed the puck between his legs and reached back to flip it past the goalie.

It was the 11th scored in a 12-11 Eastern Conference win.

While Crosby and Malkin - the league's top two scorers - have been providing plenty of offense, the Penguins' secondary players have not.

Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was shaken up 1:29 into the third period against the Devils when he collided with defenseman Mike Mottau along the end boards. Malkin fell to the ice in obvious pain before going to the bench.

Malkin scored his 100th career goal in the NHL and his 20th goal of the season recently.

Crosby has shown no signs of the knee injury that prevented him from playing in Sunday's All-Star game.

Pittsburgh looks to rebound from a disheartening loss as they continue a three-game road trip on Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Despite being outshot 43-16, the Penguins (24-21-5) appeared on their way to their fourth win in five games on Friday with a 3-1 lead in the third period at New Jersey.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who were outshot 19-7 in the first period and 17-3 over the third period and overtime. Fleury made 39 saves for the Penguins.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle will be out at least three to four weeks after breaking his right hand blocking a shot late in a game against the Avalanche on Thursday. Kaberle leads the Leafs defence in scoring this season with 30 points (four goals, 26 assists) in 49 games, but is a minus-12.

The Penguins (24-21-5, 53 points) have won three of their past five games. They had allowed just five goals in past four games before allowing four to the Devils last night.

The team was outshot, 40-23, the last time they played the Maple Leafs.

The Maple Leafs (18-23-8, 44 points) have lost eight of their past 10 games.

While Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has said the trade offers he's received have improved recently, there is still no expectation Toronto will make the next move in its rebuilding effort until closer to the March 4 deadline.

The rumour mill has Sean Avery returning to his hometown to play for the Leafs.

When the puck drops to start tonight's game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins, there will be one more blue and white jersey hanging from the rafters at the Air Canada Centre as former captain Doug Gilmour will have his No. 93 honoured.

Gilmour had 450 goals and 964 assists in 1474 career NHL regular season games.

He now coaches Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL. Last night his team gave him a 3-2 victory over the London Knights.
