Why the Timberwolves Are the Oddest Team in the NBA
In this season two NBA teams have had a 13+ losing streak, the Wolves and the Thunder. However, just a week ago, the Wolves had the best record in January. And while Al Jefferson and Kevin Love just missed their chances of Phoenix, they are one of three players playing at their peaks. The other is Randy Foye, who was injured after a good rookie season, and is now playing like he could see Dallas (2010 All-Star game) by next season.
And then there's Mike Miller. When the Wolves played against the Grizzlies last year, Mike Miller changed the whole outcome of the game hitting three pointers, and leading his Grizzlies. Now he is a top candidate on the Trading Block, and it looks like he'll be dealt to Cleveland or New Jersey for playoff purposes.
But a former ROTY who is a bench player for the Wolves (of all teams), would he be dealt as the equivalent of Rodney Carney, the other Wolves bench wing? Or would he be dealt as 2007-2008 Mike Miller?
And further more, Al Jefferson is playing way better than Shaq, and David West, who was injured when the Wolves beat the Hornets. So why isn't AJ an All-Star? His teams record. Plain and simple. But let's take a look at the East. Devin Harris, 20-27, Chris Bosh, 19-29, and Danny Granger, 19-28.
So what's the deal?
Let's lay back and accept some things. No one is going to Phoenix, though Al should be an All-Star, K-Love should be in the Rookie Challenge, and Rodney Carney should be in the dunk contest.
So what's next?
Mike Miller isn't going to play the way he is right now. He's either going to improve, or be dealt.
Al Jefferson will be an All-Star next year.
Kevin Love will be in the rookie challenge next year.
Rodney Carney will never see justice.
Corey Brewer will be not injured next season.
The Wolves have Celtics', 76ers', and maybe the Clippers' first round draft picks, and the Heat are somehow also involved or something, it's complicated.
Randy Foye will never top Brandon Roy, Kevin Love may top OJ Mayo, and Al Jefferson WILL top Kevin Garnett.
Did I just say that?
Yes. Al Jefferson will top Kevin Garnett. The best team that the Wolves have ever had included Kevin Garnett, Latrell Sprewell, Sam Cassell, and Wally Szczerbiak. When Foye, Jefferson, and Love are older, they will be as good as those guys. Craig Smith, Corey Brewer, Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes, and Rashad McCants aren't horrible either. However, Foye, Love, and Jefferson aren't going anywhere, and some Wolves are.
Ollie, Collins, and Booth are set to have their contracts expire in the offseason, leaving room for more players to be signed. The Wolves also have three to five first round draft picks.
So expect the unexpected from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
