Players Championship 2012 Leaderboard: Who to Watch for at TPC
It's hard to find a non-major golf tournament with as much luster as the Players Championship, and just like always, all the stars will be at Sawgrass this year.
Because of that, there will be plenty of golfers you must keep your eye on. And Tiger Woods, who hasn't won at TPC since 2001, isn't one of them.
Sorry.
Let's take a look at who you must keep tabs on when looking for 2012's winner of golf's fifth major championship.
Rory McIlroy
It's hard not to include world No. 1 McIlroy, even though he has absolutely no success at Sawgrass.
In 2009, he made his first appearance at TPC and was cut. He then skipped in 2010 and became one of just two Top 50 players who skipped it in 2011, drawing tons of criticism.
So, uh, yeah, Sawgrass isn't necessarily McIlroy's favorite golf course.
Nonetheless, Ridiculous Rory is putting together an amazing 2012 season. He was disappointing at the Masters, where he finished 40th, but in his other four tournaments he has finished second, first, third, and second.
That last second-place finish came last week at the Wells Fargo Championship, where he lost to the mustached-warrior, Rickie Fowler, in a playoff.
McIlory certainly has momentum going for him. If he manages to get past his inexperience in this tournament, he'll easily challenge for the win.
Sergio Garcia
El Nino hasn't appeared in a tournament since the Masters, but all that means is he's rested and relaxed to play at arguably his best course.
Garcia won TPC in 2008 and he hasn't missed the cut since.
He only has one Top 10 finish in 2012 and that came way back in February, but this is the perfect pick for Garcia to make a bounce back and surprise everyone.
After his horrendous choke job on Sunday at the Masters, Mickelson seems to have rebounded nicely by shooting six-under at Wells Fargo last week.
He's putting together a good season, even though he has been very up-and-down. Nonetheless, it seems like Lefty is being overlooked going into TPC.
Mickelson has had lots of success at Sawgrass, including a win in 2007 and two Top 20 finishes since then.
Don't forget about him.
