Mayweather vs Cotto: Don't Take Money May's Retirement Talk Seriously

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather likes to talk…a lot.

So when you hear him talk about retirement after Saturday’s convincing victory over Miguel Cotto, take it for what it is—talk.

He told reporters that it was “80-20” that he would retire, stating a Manny Pacquiao fight is “not going to happen.”

Aside from Pacman, the options are rather limited for the 43-0 fighter. On June 1, he’ll start an 87-day jail sentence which will last through the entire summer, and at the age of 35, he is certainly not as quick and athletic as he was five years ago.

So what?

This is Money May. This is the face of boxing. He knows this, and respects the sport way too much to just walk away. His star power is the only thing that keeps boxing in the consciousness of mainstream sports fans.

If he leaves now, the sport is going to be put on life support.

Obviously, every boxing fan in the world wants to see Mayweather fight Pacquaio, and it seems as if the only factor holding them back at this point is money. Pretty Boy Floyd wants more than 50 percent of the PPV money because he claims to have the ability to generate much more interest in the fight. He also blames Pacquiao’s trainer Bob Arum (via Boston Herald):

"

Bob Arum is in the way. He's stopping the fans from getting what they want. Let's give the fans what they want.

"

While it’s true Money May drives the needle in any match, there has to be some sort of middle ground these two can work out. If Mayweather was guaranteed $32 million against Cotto, he’d up that level by $20 million against Pacman. That’s outrageous money that should make everyone happy.

Even if the two money-hungry boxers can’t agree to a deal, there are lesser boxers for Mayweather to pad his record against.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (40-0-1) has been incredible. A rematch against Victor Ortiz wouldn’t be terrible. Maybe a fight against Tim Bradley if he beats Pacman would be a possibility.

Regardless of who it will be against, there is no way that Saturday was the last time we’ll see one of the all-time greats in the ring.

Besides, you think he’ll be at peace about retirement while sitting in a jail cell for three months?
