Definition of a Sportswriter

Thomas MorelandJan 30, 2009

Now that I have your attention, ahem. This is one event I would love to cover: the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

But alas, this is not what I wanted to talk about. Just thought the picture was nice.

The swimsuit issue has become part of sports, and modeling is kind of a sport, in its own little way.

What does a sportswriter do? He writes about sports, of course.

He does not write about one city's teams or events, but everything he can cover and speak about, with research and intelligence.

There are so many people on Bleacher Report who are just wrapped up in their own particular city's sports.

Here's a huge hint! If you want more readership and less arguments, diversify!

It's one thing to like a particular team, but please try not to overdo it. Try not to be biased in your reporting of your team.

Look at the negative as well as the positive. Try to play the devil's advocate more and look for more teams to write and learn about besides what's in just your city.

Some articles strike me as intended solely for the sports fans of those particular cities.

That must limit who will read your articles, I would think.

I know, I know, you are writing for that particular sports community, but you fall into the category of a beat writer for that team, I would think.

I, myself, like to watch many different teams, although I do have favorites; doesn't everyone? But in writing about them, I will be quick to point out flaws, weaknesses, and an honest, unbiased opinion whenever possible.

I never pick a team to win just because I like them. I pick the team that shows me certain facts that help me come to a logical end.

I make it a point to write about golf, basketball, NCAA sports, football, tennis, and other sporting events with equal enthusiasm.

It is very hard not to get personal and weigh in with your own opinion sometimes, but those will always be labeled editorials and not breaking news.

Editorials with your own opinion about certain subjects will always spark some debate.

I always enjoy when other writers compliment a certain piece or style of an article.

Compliments as well as critique from your peers will make you a better writer and perhaps let you look at some different ways of thinking than your own.

Everyone on Bleacher Report, keep up the great work, and don't be afraid to dip into other sports from time to time.

Different ideas from everyone about certain sports and events make things much more interesting.

I will pledge to make myself work to become fair in my reporting and always try to see things from a different light, besides the one burning inside my head.
