Kentucky Derby 2012: How Top Favorites and Long-Shots Made out
The 2012 Kentucky Derby ended in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs, as long-shot I'll Have Another stormed past morning-line Bodemeister on the final furlong to take home champion honors at the 138th Run for the Roses.
Behind of I'll Have Another and Bodemeister, Dullahan showed to round out the Top 3. I'll Have Another (15-1 odds) paid $32.60 for his win. Here are what the other winning numbers turned out (via beyondthebets.com):
Exacta ($2 bet): 19-6 - $306.
Trifecta: 19-6-5 - $1,532.
Superfecta: 19-6-5-13 - $48,000.
So how did some of the top favorites and long-shots make out Saturday? Read on to see how some of the notable thoroughbreds fared.
Union Rags
Union Rags went off at 5-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby at post time, yet he came up short just as he had done before in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November and the Grade I Florida Derby last March. A great number of bettors no doubt had their money on Union Rags to at least show on Saturday as one of the most capable racehorses in the field.
Union Rags started from post No. 4 and never really was much of a threat to the front-runners, as he kept pace but never made a charge. Jockey Julien Leparoux and Union Rags finished seventh, missing out on the money.
Went The Day Well
Went The Day Well, a 30-1 long-shot at the start of the Derby, finished fourth on Saturday, nearly showing in the money despite his horrible odds to do so. Jockey John Velazquez got the most out of his thoroughbred, who started from post No. 13, as unlikely as that might sound.
The effort didn't pay, but still the day went well for Went The Day Well, who surpassed favorites like Union Rags, Creative Cause, Take Charge Indy and Hansen at the finish.
Take Charge Indy
If you're like me, then you were on full Calvin Borel alert on Saturday at the start of the Kentucky Derby. Borel had won three of the previous five May Classics at Churchill Downs coming into Cinco de Mayo's 1 1/4 mile race, but wound up finishing second-to-last on Take Charge Indy, a horse with 11-1 odds at post time.
Take Charge Indy was coming off an extraordinary win at the Florida Derby last March, in which he throttled Union Rags by several lengths. Anything can happen on the first Saturday in May though, as bettors witnessed this weekend.
