Mayweather vs. Cotto Highlights: Miguel's Barrage Gave Floyd a Run for His Money
The scorecards showed that Floyd Mayweather had himself a reasonably easy outing against Miguel Cotto, but his face after the fight told another story.
The early rounds of the bout were all Money May, as he commanded the ring and was able to neutralize what seemed to be Cotto's strategy of getting the 34-year-old on in close quarters. Mayweather made sure the match stayed strictly in his realm of comfort, in the middle of the ring and away from the ropes or corners.
Although, May did seem to get a little to overconfident come Round 5, as Cotto was able to implement his strategy and dominate the fifth round and into the next few as well. Mayweather looked uncomfortable and a bit surprised to find himself in the corner and on the ropes.
Through this strategy, Cotto was able to bloody up Mayweather's nose and land some of his more impressive shots of the night on his undefeated opponent.
May was able to get things back to the center of the ring come the sixth round. But even with getting the fight back into his element, his opponent was able to adapt to the situation and continue to pile on some significant shots to the head and body of the leader of "Team Money."
The crowd at the MGM Arena in Las Vegas began to wonder if this was the beginning of a historic comeback, as Cotto won Round 6 and then carried over significant momentum into the seventh. While this ultimately proved to be the only real threatening barrage from Cotto, he took Money to the limit in the middle rounds, making sure his opponent earned the paycheck he was clearing after the fight.
The fighter from Caguas, Puerto Rico may not have come out on top, but as Chris Mannix of SI.com noted, he gave Mayweather the closest battle he's seen in years. Cotto came about as close as any fighter has to putting the first loss on Money's professional boxing record.
While he may not feel the greatest this morning, or for the next few weeks, Cotto can look back on the tape of this bout and feel proud of his accomplishments. He'll probably be in line for a solid payday come his next fight too. Who knows, maybe he'll even get to take on Mayweather's archrival, Manny Pacquaio, next time out.
