Kentucky Derby Results: Union Rags and Other Horses Who Let Us Down
It doesn't take long for an over-hyped racehorse to disappoint at the Kentucky Derby. After all, the annual Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs lasts only a few blinks more than two minutes. Otherwise known as an inconveniently-timed restroom visit.
Whether you watched the race or scrolled through the results in the minutes and hours following the classic 1 1/4 mile sprint, there were a fair share of notable letdowns from some of this year's preferred horses.
Several big-time thoroughbreds came up short on the grand stage Saturday afternoon in Louisville. Take a look at some of the disappointments that stand out from the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Union Rags (7th)
The heavy favorite to claim the roses on Saturday was Union Rags, a 5-1 pre-race odds horse that placed second in last fall's Breeders' Cup Juvenile race in Louisville. Union Rags finished seventh and never really challenged for the lead.
Much was expected from the three-year-old since he had post impressive wins at Belmont Park and Saratoga in late 2011. A disappointing third-place finish at the Florida Derby in late March had many hoping that the Derby would serve as his first great accomplishment. It didn't happen.
Take Charge Indy (19th)
Take Charge Indy was a colossal letdown at this year's Kentucky Derby. Calvin Borel, jockey for three of the last five Derby winners coming into Saturday, rode the 11-1 odds horse to a shocking 19th place finish. Many (including myself) had picked the dark horse coming into the race because of his impressive win at the Grade I Florida Derby back in March.
With so much experience on the back of Take Charge Indy, and quite favorable odds coming into the day, it's safe to say that much, much more was expected of the Seattle Slew (1977 Triple Crown winner) descendant.
Daddy Long Legs (20th)
Daddy Long Legs' legs weren't long enough on Saturday, as the 26-1 odds horse made little use of starting from post No. 1 to finish dead last in the field of 20. Though Daddy Long Legs was never considered to be a favorite, his pitiful display at Churchill Downs made mince meat of the notion that the closer a racehorse starts to the rail, the better its chances.
Daddy Long Legs won the Grade II UAE Derby last March which no doubt had him prepared for a 1 1/4-length track, leading many to believe that he was a challenger to the favorites. He even had previous experience at Churchill Downs, placing 12th in last November's Breeders' Cup Juvenile race.
